A vital addition for Liverpool come January?

I don’t think I’m alone in being frustrated by Martin Skrtel’s performances in a Liverpool shirt in recent weeks. He wasn’t great against Wolves and tended to put his side under more pressure than necessary, but it was his poor showing against Tottenham that will really have put a question mark by his name. His clumsy tackling and indecisive nature means that unless he gets a confidence fix sometime soon, Liverpool just wont be able to rely on him.

Since Jamie Carragher isn’t getting any younger, Daniel Agger is constantly injured and Sebastian Coates too young and inexperienced to be expected to run the Liverpool defence, it’s clear that this is an area that Kenny Dalglish will have to look at if his side are to make a serious stab for Champions League football next year.

The question then is, who on earth should Liverpool bring in? The usual candidates will be offered up. Bolton’s Gary Cahill, Blackburn’s Christopher Samba and Scott Dann amongst a list of other names that fail to really excite. The only player from the list of Premier League defenders who might be willing to leave their clubs that represents an intriguing prospect is Gary Cahill who will have only six months remaining on his Bolton contract come January and should be available at a bargain price.

The problem with this is that there’s sure to be plenty of other clubs sniffing around, attempting to tempt him and rather than get involved with what could be a long drawn out saga, I’d sooner see Liverpool look elsewhere.

In fact I’d like to see them look outside the Premier League. In particular I’m intrigued by the prospect of Ajax’s Jan Vertonghen, a player who is rumoured to have been on Liverpool’s radar for a while now. At just 24-years-old he’s surprisingly tough, but it’s his reading of the game that impresses me most. He may not be particularly pacy, but he’s quicker than Carragher and he’s a top asset for his club.

Best of all, Ajax may be looking to cash in this January if their Champions League campaign doesn’t go to plan. Whilst the fact that he’d be cup-tied may scare off a few other potential suitors that wont be a concern for Liverpool.

Given the options and the availability of other players, I’d say that this is a player who deserves Kenny’s full consideration when it comes to the January sales.

Something most decent fans know, which puts them off Vertonghen completely, is he has an injury record even worse than Aggers. The last thing we need is another crock CB. Do your homework.

We would be happy with Cahill and he will come cheap compared to Other players and equally good as some of the player who are being linked.I wud like to see Danny wilson given some chance .

Most important fact people are missing is that Dalglish has spent 100m and the new owners will require a massive return on that outlay before any other monies are put forward.I do not see the 100m well spent so can the current manager invest the money if any in a constructive manner???Remember he almost broke a weathy club in Blackburn[won the league playing long ball tatics].Disaster at celtic which he appointed John Barnes as manager[Barnes dismissal cast irreparable damage to his judgement].Dalglish as manager saw Celtic 21 points behind Rangers a Celtic unwanted record.A quote from Celtic on his sacking states…Dalglish should not have been living of his past reputation but he was doing so in part in this case, and we were sorely done by.Dalglish got his nickname as a top player at Celtic and carried that on as a player at the pool. When he got the liverpool job he was handed a top class team.He is no king as a manager and his judgement is flawed as the 100m spent will testify.

I agree wholeheartedly ! He was’n’t only handed a great team first time,he also called Paisley back to oversee him,(Paisley sat with him in his office for 3 years). Ray Harford did the same when he was at Blackburn! Liverpool need to get RAFA back !

all these fools who keep saying we have spent over a £100 million forget the fact of the £65 odd million we got back in player sales so we only really spent about £35 mil i think new players will come in in jan and maybe bump that up to te £70 mil mark since they came in, sounds about right to re build a team, look what chity chavski and united have spent! much more so stop this £100 million on players garbage

    • stevo says:

The net spend has been far greater than Utd over the last 5 years. You have not answered why anyone would give Dalglish any mor money based on what he has signed. Most important fact a fool like me would make would be,how can a club with limited funds start spending the monies you are printing.Wait till January to see who the real fool is.

    • DaveWestAus again says:

Forget Chavsky & united(who have bought players worth having!).At least two of KK’s signings are worthless!(55 mil on two substandard players )!
