Would a return to Liverpool for this man be the WRONG move?

Craig Bellamy has been in a footballing no-man’s land for too long now. Yes he impressed on loan at Cardiff City last season, but his status at his parent club Manchester City has seen him viewed by many as an ‘outsider’ or a ‘forgotten man’. I’m not sure whether I feel sorry for Craig, who’s earning a reported £95,000 a week, but it is clear that something needs to change and that he has no future at City.

The BBC and The Mirror have reported that a move back to his former clubLiverpool could be on the cards, suggesting that City are keen to get him off of the wage-bill.

If there’s any truth to this I’d be much amused, after all Craig stated not too long ago that if he couldn’t make it at City the only other club he’d consider would be Cardiff City. Perhaps he didn’t expect a club as big asLiverpoolto make their interest clear and the lure of playing for a club competing at the very top of the Premier League may well be too much to ignore.

But would a move to Liverpool be the right option for him?

My worry is that Bellamy would find himself in a position all too similar to the one he currently finds himself in at City. He currently has Edin Dzeko, Mario Balotelli, Carlos Tevez and Sergio Aguero to contend with at City. Whilst Liverpool aren’t quite so spoilt for strikers, it’s clear that when everybody’s fit, Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll will be the club’s first choice frontmen.

Will Bellamy be content to play third fiddle? Will he be content to go without regular football for yet another season? Isn’t it time he found a club where he can play week-in and week-out whilst his legs can still take the strain?

It’s clear that money is an issue here and that he might not be willing to drop his wages down to a level that would attract clubs such as those that would give him regular football. I don’t see however, why he wouldn’t be willing to take a pay-cut to join a club like Tottenham (who need the firepower) or Newcastle (if they’d take him back).

I’d even argue that Arsenal would be a better option for the Welshman, though I doubt Bellamy is on Wenger’s radar at the moment.

What is clear to me, however, is that a move to Liverpool could set Bellamy’s career back even further and given that he’s not getting any younger, perhaps it’s time to forget about the money and start thinking sensibly.
