Have Liverpool made the mistake of building their team around this man?

In the January transfer window, Liverpool football club was involved in four player transfers, two came in and two went out, the players that went out being Ryan Babel and Fernando Torres. Whilst those that came in were Luis Suarez and Andy Carroll. That is a quite interesting considering that all transfers involved forwards.

All four transfers were big money deals, with three of them being in excess of 20 million quid. Of those three deals, one of them was a British record. The player being Andy Carroll, a young player with a lot of promise and potential. Who was scoring a lot of goals and was being given many name tags like, “the next Shearer” or “the next Drogba” (I personally don’t like these name tags, I prefer the simple tag “Wonderkid”). Andy Carroll, a tall lad who is very strong, a giant as some may say, who many have described as the very best in the air, with a thunderous left foot and he possesses speed that could fool many.

When Carroll was signed, a lot was expected of him, many people wanted to see many goals. The media started going on and on about Andy Carroll and how he is a new Shearer that is going to do big things for Liverpool FC. Many talking about how Dr King Kenny is the manager that made Shearer the player he became. And how Dr Dalglish was going repeat that with Andy Carroll.

Carroll came injured and did not play a game until March, and when he did start playing the expectations on him were not huge because he was coming from injury and because his strike partners were finding the net. The midfielders were scoring too, there was a time when Meireles was on song and later on Maxi hit a purple patch, hence the British record transfer was not under much pressure to score. He did score two goals though, one of them being a belter that had every Liverpool fan dancing and a beautiful header past the rated Citeh and England Goalie, Hart. Those goals allayed any fears we had in him and made us imagine of the great times ahead. Though at the time there was a lot of talk of how wingers that swing in crosses would bring the best out of the 35 million man.

During the summer transfer window we bought Henderson for 16 million, Downing for 20 million quid and Adam for about 8 million. All these are players that are well known for assists and had quite a sizeable number of assists last season. Downing being the player known to “whip it in” from either wing, Henderson also had many assists last term and Adam who can provide great assists from set pieces.

Comolli himself said Adam can be a left sided player and SAF said his corners alone are worth 10 million. Adam has already provided one assist so far and we know that more are coming. Dr King Kenny and Comolli also brought in Enrique whose offensive play is more recognizable than his defensive play.

    1) Get off the bandwagon
    2) We haven’t built our team around him, we needed wingers anyway.
    3) He’s only 22 so get off his case. We know he can play, it’s just a matter of time.

  • Dirk Kuyt Works Hard says:

But the thing is they haven’t. I mean unless there was a memo that Downing, Adam and Henderson are ONLY allowed to put it on Big Andy’s head then I’m sure that they would be allowed to pass and cross to the likes of Suarez, Gerrard, Kuyt and aww hell, each other. Clueless article. Just because they can cross it doesn’t mean that’s all they’re allowed to do and Carroll’s the only one they can do it to.

  • Dirk Kuyt Works Hard says:

Ps: I suppose this article is pretty redundant after the Bolton game. I mean goals and assists from Henderson and Adam and a great performance by Downing, all without Carroll starting. Yeah, redundant.

  • rolando says:

    Carrol is shit!

    • venom says:

I think you are shit. Why can’t people like u give him a chance. We are just 3 games into the season and you calling him shit. Go call manure shit.

      • Jack says:

Andy Carroll is already 22 years old. If that is all he has in his armoury, then Andy Carroll is SHIT!

      • Tony says:

@venom: Andy Carroll plays like a donkey. Come to think of it, he even looks like one.

      • RONNY KHOR says:

yes, that’s right! It’s only the third match old.
We should judge Andy Carroll by the end of the season.I had the confident that he will score goals.

    • Jamie mac says:

rolando you are shit, do you even know who andy Carrol is, did you stumble on this site whilst looking for bed wetting cures? You tosser

  • truth says:

    They haven’t.

  • Celera says:

Yet another article by someone who doesn’t understand what it means to be a Liverpool fan.

We are Liverpool. All of us. And we support. This is a 22 year old who has been given something like 15 games in a red shirt.

If you’re really a fan you should be ashamed of yourself.

    Ynwa.

  • Bomber25 says:

Yes! It looks like Dalglish has recognised it too.

  • Kim says:

Caroll is a huge waste of money. Each time he plays he slows down the team. Look at the difference in pace and effectiveness when we played without him against Bolton. Big big mistake to keep putting faith in that tall beer-bellied lump !!!!!

  • Carroll9 says:

But he hasn’t built a team around him. Building a team around Carroll suggests that without him we cannot win. As you saw yesterday, we do have other players that can score from set pieces. Carroll doesn’t have to be in the box for us to whip in crosses. Henderson’s cross to Kuyt, Suarez to Downing. Adam doesn’t just have to spray the ball to Carroll’s head. He was spraying them to Downing, Hendo and Suarez. So, no we haven’t built the team around him, but we do have a team that can get THE BEST out of him. But if he’s not playing, we’re still very potent.

  • Carroll9 says:

P.S. Not being funny but what’s all this Dr Kenny business?

    • YNWA619 says:

yer since when did the “Dr” added to Kenny’s name. plz stop its annoying and it is “KING KENNY” FULL STOP.

  • Steve says:

Look at Kenny’s managerial record with Liverpool in the 1980s, and later at Blackburn, Newcastle etc …when did he ever try to build a team around one player? He doesn’t – it just isn’t his style. And he isn’t about to start now – especially after the shock exit of one-man gosl-machine Torres earlier this year. If Carroll doesn’t come good then Adam, Henderson and Downing can just provide balls for other players – as you would realize if you had watched the Bolton game yesterday.

  • GAWA says:

Dalglish rushed in too early, spent 35 mil on Carrol, he was injured bearly kicked a ball before the end of the season, mabye Dalglish could have waited and picked him up for half that, which i think is a more realistic price for him, we need another striker no doubt, Sturridge will do for the time being..YNWA

  • Akash@Superstarfc says:

Carroll is not “Next Alan Shearer”….
Throw him away…. Liverpool are waste a lot of goal because of him…. he is not the player for Top team…

  • M. says:

We can’t see future. AC showed glimpses of what he can give for NCU, but that was only half a season in EPL, rest was in Championship. I think it was a panic buy as FT was destined to leave & NCU knew that we had the money spend.

AC might come good though as I heard, even Rush took time to settle, but may be we should have looked for options outside UK (For 35 mn, we could have got almost anyone, if he was willing to play for a non CL team).

However, I don’t think “players purchased are to serve on AC”. These are quality players, can be successful into any formation. I also think that, Mata wasn’t purchased for his playing style; he is a Spanish starter, which puts him a head of any, I say any English winger (Did you see his 20 min for Chelsea? that man landed in London 48 hours back). I believe, the problem was in his passport. We spent so much not for a particular formation, rather paid premium to by average British players.

  • TRexRed says:

To doubt Carroll is to doubt the King! Any idiot that thinks they can do a better job than KK can do one! We are playing better football, more movement, more desire and more goals and still you numpties moan. Leave Carroll and the rest of the team alone and go and support arsenal where your’ll have something to bitch about!

  • lee says:

Crap article commented on my f@@king Tw@ts like Rolando and Akash who have no clue about football and probably never played it in their lives.

  • Kopking says:

    He is Useless

  • I am an ardent LFC fan and i most say we have bought sensibly this time round but that is to be expected since the king is now truely back. This is very clear in the way we have started the league. Our style of play is so entertaining, and to think we are actually winning games and being entertaining at the sametime, well that is a turn up for the books the last time that happen i can remember, was when we had a brilliant manager in the mid eighties called Kenny Daglish. If we do not win the league, it does not matter because i can finally say we are now watching the real Liverpool FC do what the have been admire for all along, and that is playing atttactive football. Long live the King.
