Growing signs of unrest at Goodison Park?

|

Evertonians have rarely become agitated since Bill Kenwright (an impassioned Blue himself) became chairman 11 years ago but all is not well at Goodison Park and not just because of a lack of transfer activity.

Three fans’ groups have joined forces to try to find answers to questions that the Board resolutely refuse to answer. In fact, the Head of Communications has told some fans that he is no longer willing to speak with them. Bill Kenwright had also become bored with the same questions being asked. Questions mainly focused on determining what the long term plan was for the club. After two costly failed ground moves and no willingness to redevelop Goodison Park, just where are Everton heading?

The groups mentioned had a meeting in London with Bill Kenwright on saturday and there has been much media interest both locally and nationally and at last Evertonians can be seen to be showing open discontent with the seemingly rudderless leadership.

However, at present it is a growing minority who are raising criticisms of the running of the club at Board level, most Everton  fans remain passive thinking that with just a little money being spent on a striker, the David Moyes will work his magic again. Let us be clear, despite many examples of  dithering in the transfer market, dithering over substitutions and what many see as negative football, his record stands proud.

How long though will he remain? His contract runs out in two years time and he needs to be testing himself against top sides in Europe. He is an ambitious man and there remains questions as to whether Everton can match his ambition.

The start to the season will be vital. Perennial slow starters Everton must get points on the board early as they did when they broke into the top four in 2004/5. 17 points in the first 7 games was a healthy cushion but it has not been repeated. There have been reasons, the Lescott affiar was allowed to drag on and he even started the first game that year, a 6-1 thrashing at home to Arsenal. It took some time to get the confidence back.

Last season the hype surrounding the team was ridiculous. Even the most blue-tinted Everton fan knew that a quality striker was needed and so it proved as goals in those early months were scarce and put so much pressure on the defence. David Moyes was also in the unusual position of having to make decisions about who played and who didn’t something he hadn’t had to do before, he nearly always knew his best eleven but for much of last year he didn’t and one suspects there were rumblings of dicontent amongst some players when left out.

However, as the season wore on, the Everton spirit galvanised the team and there was a strong home record with no league defeats after late October. A fast start against QPR in their delayed premiership opener is what Evertonians will be looking for.

Such comments are hardly helpful. Most Evertonians have an idea about what is happening but this article was designed for wider consumption.

Moyes has worked miracles at Goodison.

    • Kevin Armstrong says:

I agree, but for how much longer can he do so? He has been very quiet during pre-season, Steve Round doing the interviews, and he doesn’t have that long left on his contract. He said at the end of last season that he would seek discussions with the Board about their plans, the silence is worrying to many Evertonians.

YES moyes as been working miracles since he arrive at everton without him it would be doom and gloom it is the shame that the board don’t do enough to make miracles BK is a great talker without action in moyes we trust

  • Portchy says:

I can’t understand how a massive club like Everton can’t find a money man to take to club forward.

  • Kevin Armstrong says:

The main problems are a) the debt size and b) the need for a new ground. The debt is around £45 million and a new ground, who knows what that would cost? Goodison can no longer be developed, Liverpool don’t want a groundshare so Everton are only likely to be able to fund new players by selling the likes of Jack Rodwell, Leighton Baines et al.Hardly what Evertonians want to see.
