Could this controversial man change opinions at White Hart Lane?

|

Adeebaaayyoorrr, Adeebaayyoorr, your dad… Well, we all know the rest. Hence there’s no need in  repeating it. It could also be due to the fact that it is not suitable for print. Anyway, we all know it, but is it a possibility that the lyrics, tune and tone could  change at White Hart Lane this season?

Spurs fans may have some rather ambivalent feelings towards this transfer and that is highly understandable. After all Adebayor has scored an incredible eight goals in nine matches against the Spurs whilst playing for Arsenal and another two against the Lillywhites last year, whilst playing for Real Madrid. It is beyond all doubt that this man is controversial, and if he were to sign for Tottenham, this could be the most controversial signing of the summer. It could also prove to be the signing of the summer.

Financially this transfer could prove a bargain for Tottenham. Although his current wages are astronomical at Manchester City, there is no way that Levy will agree to pay the whole lot. They could possibly land at about £70 – 80,000 a week. Maximum. I struggle to see Tottenham pay more than that. This is an amount which is definitely do-able for Levy though, having recently seen the back of Robbie Keane – one of the club’s highest paid players, leaving for one of his ‘favourite’ football clubs; L.A. Galaxy.

Also considering the fact that this, at the moment, imminent deal, will be a loan agreement, with option to buy next summer, Spurs could get a top striker for an absolute bargain – the equivalent of purchasing a Porsche at the price of a Peugeot.

Looking at what Emmanuel Adebayor would bring into Harry Redknapp’s side, his physical presence is beyond doubt. Being 6ft 3in above the grass (maybe even 6ft 4in if one counts his eccentric hair) and fairly quick as well, the 27 year old will provide the Spurs attack with some longed for physical presence up front. Both from through passes from the feet of Van der Vaart and (possibly) Modric, as well as crosses from Lennon and Bale, the Togolese striker will undoubtedly be a threat to any opponent.

Being a good header of the ball, as well as possessing good technique and finishing (many Spurs fans and Arsenal fans probably still remembers the goal of the season in 2007, when he flicked the ball up to himself, then volleyed it past Robinson) he would prove an intimidation as the Tottenham wingers and midfielders can provide him distribution from all over the park, despite the fact that he occasionally does have the commitment and dedication of a satanist in a jump suit. This is indeed an area in which the controversial striker has received some criticism over the years. Harry Redknapp, however, may be able to force the change.

Furthermore, the former Metz, Monaco, Arsenal and Manchester City player does come with a sort of guarantee as well (apart from the fact that Spurs fans now know he won’t score against their club this season) he has already performed in the English Premier League. He doesn’t need three months to adapt to the English way of playing. And with Tottenham playing Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool and Arsenal before October 1st, that factor could be incalculably crucial. As will the wealth of experience from Champions League football he is bringing with him.

There are indeed some positives for the Spurs fans if this transfer was to be completed. Maybe the lyrics will be sung a bit differently at White Hart Lane this season? Here is a brief selection:

Adeebaayyorr, Adeebaayyoorrrr, you hate Arsenal, but we hate them mooore.

Adeebaayyoorr, Adeebaayoorrrrr, your parents are doctors, and neither are pooooor.

More song suggestions are appreciated in the commentary area.

  • Mark says:

Very good article except for the “possibly” Modric crap.

  • Dad says:

Spurs fans have no problem with him, we know he’s good and we know he is what we need, especially if we can get him on a free instead of a loan deal.

  • Thanks for the replies. One problem with getting him for free could be his salary. All though money is saved in transfer fees, Levy is probably reluctant to blow the wage roof at the club. Loan deal with City still paying some of his wages could therefore be better for Spurs. Or what do you guys think?
