It’s little surprise that Villareal striker Giuseppe Rossi has become such a sought after player all throughout Europe. Even Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp hasn’t been shy when it comes to heaping praise on the 24 year-old. He recently told Sky Sports News: “Rossi’s top drawer. He’s a clever player. He gets it into feet, he holds the ball up, he scores goals, and he’s the Italy centre forward now.”
This high praise has Spurs fans excited and hopeful that Harry may force the Tottenham hierarchy into making a move for the Italian International. Redknapp has even gone as far as to admit that he’s been a transfer target for Tottenham before: “We tried to get him last year and I think the fee was £18million. That looks cheap now but he was a player we nearly had last year.”
Whilst nothing has been said as to whether Harry is still interested in bringing Rossi to White Hart Lane, you’d have to think that he is monitoring his situation very closely.
Tottenham are in need of a world-class striker for next season and Guiseppe Rossi certainly fits the bill. Redknapp is happy for Robbie Keane to leave the club, whilst the future of players like Roman Pavlyuchenko, Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe remains very much up in the air. It’s fair to say that Tottenham are rather ‘short’ on strikers and who better to fill the void than a proven goal-scorer like Rossi?
If they are to seriously pursue Rossi, it’s clear that they will face tough completion from Juventus for his signature – that’s if Villarreal agree to sell. Rossi’s agent hasn’t exactly been tight lipped about the Italian’s future, telling reporters: “The important thing for Rossi is to go to a top club that would welcome him. If it’s not a top club then he’ll stay at Villarreal. Giuseppe wants to evaluate everything carefully, he knows that a decision on where he plays next year is a fundamental one for his career.”
He also made it clear that whilst Champion’s League football is important to Rossi, it’s not essential, so long as the club in question displays a certain degree of ambition. Speaking of Juventus and their lack of Champion’s League football, Rossi’s agent Federico Pastorello said: “It’s clear that their present penalises them seeing as they won’t be playing in Europe next season. But their appeal remains intact. Let’s say they are like a beautiful woman who just needs to go to the hairdresser.”
Quite. The most important thing to garner from that is that Rossi would be willing to move to a club that didn’t provide Champion’s League football immediately, so long as it was a genuine prospect in the future. That seems to me to be the position that Tottenham are in at the moment.
One thing that stands in Tottenham’s favour when it comes to acquiring Rossi’s signature is the fact that Italian clubs can be notoriously tight-pursed when it comes to transfers. I just don’t see Juventus as being willing to stump up the £23-4m that would be necessary to tempt Villareal into selling. If Tottenham can dig deep, they may well find themselves in the driving seat for his signature.
Given the undisputed quality of the man in question wouldn’t this be a wonderful position to be in?

I can’t see him wanting to join us unfortunately. If we couldn’t get him last summer when we were in the CL we stand little chance now. Spurs simply cannot pay the wages to attract establishedtop class players. Our best option seems to be looking at players just below the rador like Berbatov and Modric were.

Errr John. Liverpool were nearly bust and like Chelsea and Man City will be subject to the new fincial fair play league. You’re probably too young to have gone through the Scholar days when the bank was threatening to put Spurs in receivership. Levy is maintaininbg a solvent.well run run club and I don’t have the financial acheivements that he has so I won’t presume to know better than him. Look at Leeds and then think about the longer term.The deadwood has to be sold. We need 25 players plus the youngster with prospect to be loaned out.
