Why do the media continue to prompt unrest in Tottenham’s set-up?

Transfer speculation can entertain and frustrate in equal measures. In the summer months waiting for the new season to start reading the back pages for the latest rumours of who could be leaving or arriving your club is an enjoyable pastime. But sometimes speculation can cause more trouble than enjoyment for clubs and players.

Tottenham have had a shaky start to the transfer window so far this summer. Intense speculation about the future of Luka Modric has prompted doubts over the futures of their other key players, including Gareth Bale who has been linked with Barcelona. But the latest name to be reportedly heading for the White Hart Lane exit door is Michael Dawson. Dawson wouldn’t be high on a list of the most likely leavers at Spurs, not because of a lack of talent but the Spurs’ skipper seems like a settled and loyal member of their squad.

Reports emerged on Wednesday that Dawson was in a dispute with Spurs over his contract but the defender has immediately refuted the claims. Unfortunately for Spurs they are one of the clubs at the centre of so much speculation and this has lead to the obvious and lazy rumours that everyone from the kit man to the captain is considering their future. According to the media there is currently a domino effect of discontent in the Spurs’ dressing room.

But Spurs are in no way the only club affected by speculation. Back in October last year Liverpool owner John Henry made a statement on the Liverpool website labeling stories about their key players possibly leaving as “destructive and unwarranted”. That statement came after speculation over the future of Pepe Reina.

Henry seemed willing to ignore nuisance rumours and accepted them as common practise these days. If such reports are completely untrue most can be brushed under the carpet and deemed harmless. It is those rumours that plant a seed of doubt in people’s minds that can be destructive for both the clubs and players they are concerning.

Cesc Fabregas’ transfer saga is another popular rumour but this one just won’t go away. To be fair to the media this one seems to have just a little truth behind it despite a possible deal for Fabregas not gaining any steam recently. Whilst Arsenal claim he will stay speculation surrounding their captain’s future just won’t go away, the latest being that Fabregas has told Barcelona’s Xavi that he is ‘suffering’ because of his desire to join the European Champions. The constant speculation over the future of their captain and best player has understandably be causing unrest at Arsenal for years.

Luckily for Spurs these new claims about Dawson seem to just be rumours. Spurs will no doubt take centre stage on the back pages sometime soon but hopefully for Harry Redknapp it will about star arrivals rather than anymore unwanted departures.

The are certain cesspits of the media that have had it in for Tottenham for years and if its a slow news day the will make up anything about our fine club as long as it drags us through the gutter.
I ignore anything and everything in the media unless it comes from a reliable source but believe me when I say that there are no reliable sources in the media anymore.
You are better off listening to ITK, some are good and if you follow certain blogs some rarely get it wrong, its a shame that the media don’t know which ITK to listen to because they might very occasionally get something right.

Most of the sports writers and talking heads have gotten into their business in the same decade that the perennial top four ruled the roost – and probably became supporters of one of them. Thus, in Fleet Street you have a bunch of reporters sucking up to Arsenal and Chelsea, and favored their influential managers, Ferguson, Mourinho and Wenger for example. They do not see the game with unbiased eyes, and writing rubbish about Tottenham is their bread and butter.

It’s because Tottenham is a laughing-stock and people enjoy reading about Geobbels-lookalike Levy, and soon-to-go-on-trial Redknapp and their misfortunes. Aside from the hierarchy at West Ham, there is no pair of dolts more laughed at than the ones at Spurs. Little men of envy and crassness, trying to look big in a world beyond their means. And all the while, trying their hardest to rip out Tottenham’s heritage and transplant the club to another part of London. Now an also-ran club with no more Premiership titles than Crystal Palace or Sid’s Deli Sunday League side, Tottenham’s glories are as ancient as the movies Ben-Hur and Spartacus. Greaves, Gilzean and Mackay still haven’t been replaced and never will be – it’s ALWAYS going to be about the past for Tottenham and they can’t even be sure the future will be in North London. Like I said, Laughing-stocks. Of course the media plays on it… it’s what everyone LOVES to see.

Tottenham are a laughing stock? like having a captain who’s parents are drug dealers and shop lifters and is so poorly paid that he earns a few quid showing people around the club…Oh, right then there was the Flasher of course and a chairman who wanted to electrocute his own fans. How about bragging about the ZDS cup or less than 12k at home to Oxford in a league match. Wait a minute how about calling yourself Chelsea, when you’re in Fulham, all show no dough, now its all dough no class. How about there was once a football club in SW6 but now its just a Russians plaything, nothing to do with its fans whatsoever, what an Arrogant sycophantic bigoted fool you are Sir Cecil! an apt idiotic name for a pompous pumped up pillock like yourself

Sandro was another one the wxxxxxx were stirring it up over. It almost seems as if because we’re so close to the top four, as a potential threat to them it’s open slather on us. The trouble is, as has happened with Modric, the media have not helped one iota in dampening down the speculation.

  • essexian76 says:

OK, For starters most Fleet Street football hacks are West Ham or Arsenal fans.
Paul Jiggins and a few notable others are Chelsea. If you’ve ever supported a team then to heap praise or be unbiased in one’s opinion is very difficult to disguise. Even Tony Gale when asked about Spurs, always clears his throat, winces a little then croaks an insincere compliment. Micky Quinn and Jason Cundy on TALKsport and the Evertonian that was Mike Parry couldn’t disguise their allegiances if their jobs depended upon it. Unfortunately Tottenham Hotspur have nothing other than a passionate and vocal fan-base in their corner, and as Mr Jiggins is experiencing at the present time we are fairly uncompromising when roused. Spurs have never been popular with the press. I think much of it stemmed from Sir Alan Sugar’s reign and in particular the execution of the saint of lazy journalists Terry Venables. Sugar couldn’t give a toss about Fleet Street, as his personal and private life, held no fears from them, but at every given opportunity since 1993, they’ve given the club a hard time. Sugar, despite getting conned into the purchase of the club initially; told it as it was and told them in no uncertain terms what he thought of them ( Fleet Street). After selling to ENIC, Sugar was replaced by Daniel Levy, who is another uncompromising chairman with little or no time the lies and mind games Fleet Street can offer, and quite righly Spurs have proved that they can be successful, get crowds and play great football without Fleet Streets help. On the reverse we have reporters openly trying to undermine and influence players by printing spurious rumours on the premise that they’ve ‘insider’ information. Paul Jiggins laughably was caught out on Thursday morning when speaking live on TALKsport, he gave chapter and verse about Michael Dawson’s unhappiness and how poorly off he was in comparison to other players. Within FIVE minutes Jiggins had been destroyed, as the club issued a statement basically calling Mr Jiggins a liar and inventing the story he’d published and then had the effrontery to reinforce with a live broadcast. Oh, for the sake of a mere five minutes, he could’ve answered the question at the same time the statement from Spurs hit the airwaves! Sorry about the length, but as they say in Fleet Street, there are lies, damned lies and then there’s the press, well that’s how I read it!
