Should this much maligned Arsenal star be given ONE more chance?

Denilson and Diaby have under performed in the centre of Arsenal's midfield this seasonArsenal fan patience is at an all time low – but that’s what six years without a trophy will do for you. Whilst certain players were given the benefit of the doubt in seasons past and survived the wrath of fans through being an exciting or intriguing prospect, those days appear to be numbered. If you haven’t been performing then the likelihood is that the fans will have lost patience with you. If it doesn’t look like you can aid Arsenal in the quest for silverware then you might as well move elsewhere to fund transfers for players who can.

Players like Denilson, Tomas Rosicky, Nicklas Bendtner, Manuel Almunia, Sebastien Squillaci, Abou Diaby and Carlos Vela all have their cards marked.

I remember a certain sense of excitement surrounding Denilson when he first arrived at the club. His arrival was facilitated through the procurement of a ‘special talent visa’, something that the likes of Miyaichi and Wellington Silva have not been granted. Nowadays however, he’s more renowned for his lack of dynamism and effort. All too often he fails to move play forward, preferring instead to pass sideways thus slowing play down.

Imagine if you will, a less talented Michael Carrick, who simply does not seem to be all that affected by the plight of the club that pays his wages.

Whilst he’s grabbed a couple of impressive long-range efforts, he also doesn’t contribute enough goals for the Gunners. He’s a model example of Arsenal’s tendency to pass rather than shoot and doesn’t seem to have improved in this respect throughout his time in North London.

He also doesn’t track back with enough urgency – something which has cost Arsenal in the past.

Given that all this has been said, it would be madness to suggest that the Gunners should attempt to keep hold of this young Brazilian, wouldn’t it?

Despite everything, I can’t help but feel that Denilson has some value as a squad player. Denilson has previously mentioned that he’s wants out at Arsenal, but if he could be persuaded otherwise, then the Gunners should keep him as a fill-in for Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere.

After all Denilson is an extremely ‘tidy’ player. That’s to say he rarely misplaces his passes, can play his way out of tough situations and has plenty of stamina. Whilst I can’t see him making his way into Arsenal’s first team, he has certain characteristics that should aid him as a squad player.

What’s more, I can’t help but feel that we’ve yet to see the best of Denilson. Arsene Wenger and the coaching staff need to get at the youngster and provide him with the motivation to play his best football for the Gunners. A stimulated, driven Denilson could be a completely different beast. With that said, should Arsenal offer Denilson one more opportunity to make it at the club?

I wouldn’t even let him “fill in” my tooth. HELL NO!!!!!

  • Spectrum says:

Perhaps Almunia could be given another chance as well ? Think how much money the club could save !
    “In Arsene we rust.”

    You can’t polish a turd.

  • MikeSA says:

    “a less talented Michael Carrick”!

At that point you made it clear you no a little less than f$%@k all about football.

Denislon has more skill in his left toe than carrick could accumulate in a millenium.

  • AFC4LYFE says:

are you on cannabis or something stronger?

  • MikeSA says:

    apologies:

    “know”, not “no”

    “Denilson”, not “Denislon”

    Damn fingers………………….

  • Ollie says:

Denilson HAS to go. Dont play him in the highly likely situation where we cant sell him. I’ve said this for four years. What use is his stamina when he has no commitment, steel or bottle? When a referee outpaces you when you’re meant to be tracking back……….

  • Ollie says:

Sorry, in the event we wont sell him, dont play him.

  • domingo says:

this is clearly not an issue for debate. sell him for extra football kits!

  • Slugboy says:

When he first started playing he was enthusiastic and energetic. He definitely lost that last year. He needs to make way, as we still have the following who can play central midfield: ramsey, wilshire, Diaby, Fab (I know), Nasri (I know), song, frimpong, Eastmond and also Djourou, Vermaelen and Kosielny.

He is clutter now and needs to be sold on. We only have 25 spots in the squad and I doubt he will get a spot next year.

  • EIE says:

Sell him and tell him to take Bendtner, Eboue, Rosicky, Song, Diaby & Almunia with him!

  • Jack says:

Are you joking!!! Doesn’t misplace passes! I guess you didn’t see him playing in the carling cup.

It’s a joke that he’s gone on tour and Henri Lansbury didn’t (and is prob going off on loan). Denilson exemplifies everything that is wrong with the current arsenal squad, Henri everything we miss.

Flog him for two quid and we’d still be quits in, not having to pay his ridiculous salary!

This article’s spot-on. All the people with extreme views on Denilson are, quite frankly, idiots. The actual fact of the matter is that whichever side of the debate you swing to, it’s marginal at the moment. He hasn’t done quite enough to demand a place in the side, and hasn’t done quite poorly enough to need to be sold. He’s just on that cusp at the moment. Clearly, he should get one more season if we can persuade him to stay.
