Has Wenger found yet another bargain gem?

Following Gervinho’s display against FC Cologne in Germany, which saw him score both goals in Arsenal’s 2-1 victory over the German outfit, Arsene Wengerappears to be rubbing his hands together and hoping that he has bagged the bargain of the summer in the Ivorian striker.

The Frenchman stated:

‘I hope (he’ll be a bargain). When you see all the fees around you become dizzy. In this case he wanted to join us. He had only one year on his contract so it was a good opportunity for us. We do what we want and we look first at the quality of the player and after if we have the money we spend it.’

I for one was hoping that the 24-year-old forward would sign for us ever since his name was mentioned. So much so that I wrote a ‘10 things you should know about’ article on Gervinho, highlighting his credentials.

I am fully aware that it’s still too early to be very excited about the upcoming season. However, with Gervinho and Robin van Persie upfront, I think we will be a lot more capable to break the trophy drought – let’s just hope the two of them work well together and form a unique partnership upfront.

Wenger was glad to see that the Ivory Coast international got on the score sheet early for the Gunners.

He went on to say:

‘If, as a striker, you go six weeks without a goal you raise questions. But now it’s out of the way. You could see how quick he is to get behind defenders. He has qualities that are always very interesting for a team like us who have a lot of other players that go behind defenders at the right moments.’

In my mind, the boss has hit the nail on the head here and it is going to be very interesting to see how well Gervinho does in his first season at Arsenal.

I am hoping for big things to occur, so much so that I have included him in my fantasy football team! So I for one will be following his progress much more intently than others this season.

In terms of money he might be a bargain, but proof is in the pudding, and until Arsenal win anything, in terms of football it wouldn’t even if Arsenal had paid zero for Gervinho. Only time will tell, so lets not get ahead of our self.

If the money being talked about is correct then bargain is not the word. Andy Carroll for £35m or Juan Mata for £13m? Hmmmm tough one! Being a natural left footer, Mata should give some balance to that flank with Nasri moving inside to fill the void left by Cesc. Click my name!

i agree with you,it appears that gervinho is a great player, something different from what we’ve got,but we still need a physical player up front, why not go for benzema now that real madrid wana sell?

Gem or not, until Arsenl start winning games and trophies will be the proof.Otherwise it will be another who failed to shine when given chance after chance. We have had enough of these raw diamonds. It’s time for the real diamonds.
