Media Watch: Tottenham willing to sell this talented midfielder for as low as £12m?

As if it’s not enough that Tottenham have had to put up with their esteemed midfielder Luka Modric being linked to all and sundry there now seems to be a growing number of rumours concerning their talented young Brazilian Sandro. Spurs fans frustration over the constant rumour-mongering that surrounds Modric is understandable: their chairman Daniel Levy has made it clear that he’s not for sale, yet the stories and articles concerning the Croatian just wont dry up.

After their failure to secure Champion’s League football next season it has become all too easy for the Papers and online publications to suggest that Tottenham’s star players may look for a move elsewhere. In this regard, the rumours surrounding the likes of Luka Modric and Gareth Bale aren’t all that surprising. The stories surrounding Sandro are a little more perturbing – but that’s not to say that there’s any more truth to them.

The Mirror recently ran with a headline that read: “Spurs considering selling Sandro to Villareal”. The story itself contains a few too many ‘could’ and ‘maybes’ to be plausible but the Mirror still slapped an ‘Exclusive’ tagline on it. The real kiss of death for the story, however, is the low evaluation that they slap unto Sandro’s head. Are we really expected to believe that Tottenham would be willing to let Sandro go to Spain for a mere £12m?

Tottenham already spent £8m on Sandro and he’s improved exponentially under their care. He’s young, talented and is only getting better and adding more dimensions to his game. It’s just not credible to suggest that Tottenham would consider letting him go for just £12m. It’s not that surprising, given the lack of credibility, that the Daily Mail also jumped on the story.

Tottenham are likely to spend the whole summer safeguarding their players from potential moves to new clubs. The rumours won’t stop and frustration amongst fans is likely to build and build. The only way to react in return is to treat these rumours with the amount of respect they deserve: none.

It’s flattering really that so many of Tottenham’s players have been linked with big money moves. It’s clear evidence of the strength in depth of this Spurs squad and if Harry Redknapp and Daniel Levy can keep this team together, then who knows what they can achieve next season. One thing’s for sure: Sandro looks set to be a big part of Tottenham’s future and won’t be sold this summer – certainly not for a miserly £12m.

    12 million?
No, we plan to sell Sandro for 2 million after we’ve given Modric and Bale to Chelsea for 8 million and a bag of balls. Daniel Levy will then bend over a table and have Roman shag him with the rough end of a pineapple while a Daily Mail videographer records the event. Then we’ll fill our team with Sunday morning players from Hackney Marshes and everyone’s happy!

First decent article on these supposed sales. And its not flattering, its bloody annoying. You don’t see other clubs putting up with this shit. If the media were to be believed we are selling Modric, Bale, Sandro, Kabul, Lennon and Crouch, I’am just waiting for the supposed sales of VDV, BAE, Dawson, its not a f**king fire sale we came 5th with harbours of making top 4 again next season. Oh and when they make these stories up at least make up some proper bloody transfer fees.

I for one am not suprised, the media have been doing it to us for years and like George says,no-one elsa has to put up with it.
      Constantly undermined….

Hmm. nasri, fabregas (every year for past 3) arsenal have it too. it was john terry to man city before.
id rather teams wanted our players and levy was saying no. rather than we had a team of crap that nobody wanted (spurs circa.94-2006)

Yes it’s bollocks. So why repeat it turdheads?

  • f off chelsea says:

at least we aint getting reamed like villa.
As for the media, stop working for red nose and the world cup bid buyers. Cunts.

I don’t mind all this blather about who we might buy and sell. Why don’t I mind? Because it is all rubbish and keeps the idiots busy while the real stuff is going on. Who saw VDV coming? No-one who gets paid to write for a living. Who saw Kaboul coming back? No-one who gets paid to write for a living. Who talked about us buying Cavani, and Dzeko, Hulk and Falcao, and Defoe going to Arsenal, and Cole coming to Spurs, and a whole bunch of other nonsense? People who get paid to write for a living. There are very few instances where the papers know what is really going on until the clubs break it. Did they know we had bid 35 million euros for Rossi? Of course they didn’t. They thought we were going to sell Jenas to Inter !!?!! And nobody saw Carroll going to Liverpool. In most cases what the papers know for fact are ‘open secrets.’ Torres to Chelsea was one. Fabregas possibly to Barca when he is crocked and tired is another. Other than that they just pick a name from a hat, a new team from another hat, and then punch a random number generator and arrive at a transfer fee. “Wes Brown to Ajax for 8million.” There, I just made one up. And then that will run for a few days until I they make up a new one, “Lansbury to Stoke for £4million.” And so on ad infinitum.
Football clubs and journalists are separate entities. That journalists get to interview managers and players for 60 seconds of cursory ‘yeah, well, yeah,’ type comments at the end of a game does not mean they sit in the boardroom or get inside managers and chairmans heads. Journalists are more closely associated with agents. Agents are men who spend their lives raking muck to try to get good deals for their players so that they can justify their exorbitant and unnecessary wages (agents, that is). While it is true that in some intances the papers can help turn the heads of players, i.e. Modric this year and Berbatov before, the manager is the one in control. In a rare case like Berba he proved himself to be such a vile piece of trash that we were better off with him gone. With Modric I am sure Harry will cuff him round the ear and tell him to go and do a few laps and to stop being so silly.
So the bottom line is, let the papers write what they want. It doesn’t affect the club and it rarely affects the players. And those who it does affect are not worth toffee paper.

I think it’s time for the football authorities to act on this constant barrage of press related attacks on many of the ‘lesser’ clubs. It’s fairly easy to retrace the steps leading up to and ending any transfer by adopting a code of transparency from the agent and his dealings with the buying club. Current rules state that any interested club must lodge a formal bid with the selling club before any negotiations can commence. If any transgression is proven as with Carrick, Keane and Berbatov, then a points deduction and compensation penalty must be enforced, with further sanctions against the agent. All footballers, clubs and agents work for and within the PL,Football league and UEFA guidelines and its about time these governing bodies acted forcefully instead of sitting back and doing nothing. Why did Tevez play for West Ham, if his contract was scrutinised properly? It was simply because those mentioned are ineffective, toothless money grabbing bodies with little time for the fan or game in general!
