It’s clear to most people – fans and pundits alike – that Arsenal need a world class striker to partner Robin Van Persie in attack if they are to win any silverware next season. The Dutchman was scoring for fun at the close of last season, but fellow strike partners Nicklas Bendtner either failed to produce the goods or weren’t given the opportunities to do so. A lack of goals upfront is no laughing matter and desperate times call for desperate measures but are we really to believe that the Gunners are as desperate as the Daily Star would have us believe?

According to the Star, Arsene Wenger is looking to bring Tottenham’s Jermaine Defoe across the North London divide, in a bid to increase Arsenal’s attacking options. The article doesn’t offer much in the way of quotes or evidence regarding Arsenal’s interest, preferring instead to focus on Tottenham’s efforts to sign Didier Drogba and Theo Walcott’s self-appraisal.

It does note that Defoe didn’t exactly have the best of seasons. He either found himself on the bench or not scoring. Either way, you can hardly say that he was putting himself in the shop window. Whilst Defoe may have had a decent price-tag a season or two ago, his stock will have plummeted along with his fortunes this season.

But just because he’ll be available for cheap doesn’t mean that the Gunners should seek out his services. Despite his relatively young age it strikes me that Defoe’s best days are behind him. There’s a reason why Harry hasn’t placed too much faith in him this season, despite the fact that Tottenham have been clamouring out for a proven striker.

Only top class players should cross the North London divide. It takes a lot of hard work and a lot of ability to win over Arsenal fans if you’re an ex-Tottenham man and it’s my worry that Jermaine Defoe at this stage in his career just doesn’t have what it takes.

Arsene Wenger has mentioned in previous interviews that he showed an interest in Jermaine Defoe. Maybe if Wenger had gotten hold of Defoe earlier on, he’d still be banging in goals on a regular basis. Unfortunately his career has reached a nadir and now just isn’t the right time for him to join Arsenal.

I think the much more important issues at Arsenal are getting Sami Nasri to sign a new deal and buying a top class centre-back.
With Nasri only having a year left on his current deal they need to get a new contract agreed quickly, or sell him and bring in a replacement. If he decides to go elsewhere then there are plenty of good replacements out there.
The centre-back situation isn’t too bad, Thomas Vermaelen’s return will be massive, he was a huge miss last season. Having him back as the main defender along with Koscielny who was very good at times and Johan Djourou, who improved alot throughout the season will bring some much needed stability to the defence. Arsene Wenger just needs to add one more top central defender to the squad, a John Terry ot Nemanja Vidic type and they should go close to winning the premiership.
The current strikers are more than good enough to win the league, just as long as too many goals arn’t being conceded.
