How Tottenham SHOULD respond if they lose Modric

With the departure of Luka Modric now inevitable Spurs must now turn their attention to finding reinforcements to add a creative guile back in to their central midfield area.

The players recent comments in the press today have all but sealed a move away, the only questions remaining are where he will end up and how much they will have to pay to secure his services.  There have been many reports bandied about regarding Modric’s current value but with Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City the figure is expected to far inflated from the optimistic £22m bid Chelsea made last week.  I suspect a figure of around £33 representing a return of double what Spurs paid for him will eventually be enough to prise him away.

So if Harry can’t find anyone to lace Modric’s boots for around that value then how on earth will he find someone to fill them?  The answer simply is he can’t.  If there were other players out there with Modric’s ability then the vultures wouldn’t be circling White Hart Lane as we speak.  Harry will need to do what he does best, speculate in the transfer market and hope to find a gem.

There is no secret that Spurs are in the market for a new striker and that the Spurs Chairmen Daniel Levy is reluctant to spend big on players with no sell on value like Drogba.  This could leave Spurs in a bargaining position for the likes of Daniel Sturridge who has showed much promise in his short time in the first team at Man City, Bolton and most recently representing England U21?s.  Such a deal would leave Spurs with enough excess cash to move for Scott Parker and potentially even reunite Joe Cole with Redknapp.  A three for one deal may at least start to appease fans even if the players mentioned aren’t the eventual replacements Harry moves for.  It would also ease the move out of the club for fringe players like Jenas, Palacios, Bentley and Kranjcar releasing more funds and wages for a big markee signing.

The sale of Modric would be a massive disappointment to the fans but spent and negotiated wisely could eventually help Spurs strengthen and propel them back into the coveted Champions League positions.

“With the departure of Luka Modric now inevitable…”. Hardly. Daniel Levy’s staked his, and the club’s, reputations by declaring in extremely unambiguous terms that Modric won’t be going anywhere, especially not to Chelski. Redknapp’s reaffirmed this by basically calling Levy out on his bluff, in all probability forcing Levy to dig in even more ,since his manager’s now thrown down the gauntlet as well by declaring that the chairman promised him that Modders wouldn’t be sold. Thirdly, there are more and more reports that Modders is set to release a statement backtracking on his comments and expressing remorse for having uttered them. Kia joorabchian’s been revealed as having been deeply involved as well, in all probability trying to fruitlessly facilitate the transfer, probably even preparing the earlier statement himself, which explains why THFC was so unprepared for it, as they had, and probably continue to have, a good relationship with both Modders and his agent, Zdravko Mamic. Fourthly, Chelsea’s bids for Modders have hitherto been insultingly low. IF they had immediately bid in upwards of 40 million quid, perhaps they could have forced LEvy’s hand. As it stands, by bidding a stupidly low 22 million quid and then publicising it, they’ve forced Levy into digging in and slapping a large ‘Not for Sale’ sticker on his hitherto most valuable asset. so this is far from ‘confirmed’ . in fact, it may just have all blown over.

Well said mate completely argee. Pete Harris you are a poor excuse for a journalist

  • IoanX says:

With that money Spurs could buy one or two other players who could eventually have a more efficient impact on the team and also better statistics than the 3 goals and 2 assists of Modric in 38 PL games (see http://soccernet.espn.go.com/team?id=367&cc=5739).
Like Leandro, Falcao, Mauri, Götze, Sanchez (he probably joins Barca), Vidal, Prieto, Inler, Pastore, Badelj and others.

    • Yidango says:

If our strikers were to convert their chances then Modri?’s stats would be a lot better.. If you were to go to games then you would see how influential a player he is and is attracting attention from Chelsea and Man U amongsts others….

  • davspurs says:

This has nothing to do with Modrics value to Sputs hi states tell a tale quite different to my fellow fans adulation four goals and not many assists one a penalty. This is about not allowing teams to bully one of there rivals we should sell him to Spain and get Benzimar or Barca and Bojan.

  • Digi-Spurs says:

I hate people who use statistics, xavi got about the same as Modric and should he be replaced with Gotze etc?

  • Mickey says:

This is now all about greedy agents, ill advised players, and the cash to burn (but don’t pay their debts) clubs, getting their hands caught in the cash till. It’s about time someone slammed the drawer shut, just hope their hands still in it at the time.

What crack are you smokin? Dubaispur has nailed it on the head. Do a bit of bloody research before you start mouthing off crap. Ok so you took the Mail’s apparent ‘exclusive’ but why ignore Levy’s statement and then Harry’s talksport interview?

And trying to link Sturridge to us in a part exchange? Bollocks. Sturridge will deffo not be joining us now either as part exchange for Modric or a straight transfer. Chelsea wouldnt sell us the steam off our piss now.

    and IoanX

Did you watch any of our games this season?!?! Those stats do not tell us the true impact Modric had on our season. Xavi had similar stats last season for Barca. Should they sell him too?

Ask yourself this…why do Chelsea want Modric if his stats, in your opinion, are not good enough for us?

Modric = pure class simple as. Heartbeat of the team. Unsellable

Oh, and your list of players, all I’ll say is that this is not Footy Manager 2011. This is real world real life stuff. I bet you sub players at half time if their rating falls below 5.8.

He’s not going anywhere, nor should he.

Jesus the place has gone mad.

    Davspurs

You need to give up the drugs mate! While that post was mostly legible I cant beleive any Spurs fan would want to sell Modric.

If we could replace him then Chelsea would be looking elsewhere.

  • edspur says:

I’d take the £33m from Abrahmovic that you reliably inform us is Modric’s value and then buy him back from the Chavs at the £22m you reliably infirmed us he’d be sold for first time round. Tidy little profit, we keep an important player and he gets to experience life at a supposedly “bigger” club. We’re all happy….well except you maybe as you’ll have to concoct some new drivel.

we gotta do better then joe cole! podolski

Unfortunately the precedent hear is for the player to move on. I for one will be devastated. If one looks at previous occasions where chairmen and or managers make definitive staments about people not leving the player has moved on. check out the talksport article if you dont believe me: http://www.talksport.co.uk/magazine/features/2011-06-20/modric-going-nowhere-neither-were-carroll-torres-rooney-given-hughes-and-more

If we continue with the wage structure we have – we will not be able to keep or attrack truly top players – i’m not suggesting we suddenly give players £130K a week but maybe trim the squad and be prepared to have a couple of earners on our near £90K mar. Then at least when the bigfish come along they aren’t offering to triple a players weekly wage. I know this is difficult without a new stadium but not impossible if we move some of the deadwood on. Even at a bit of a loss getting rid of people like Keane bently jenas – would do very little damage to the quality of the squad overall but save a a huge amount on the wage bill.
