FC Barcelona: The greatest team ever?

The club motto at FC Barcelona is “mes que un club”, in English this translates to, “more than a club”, I can’t say I disagree.

Since ex-player and fan favourite Josep ‘Pep’ Guardiola took over the managerial reign at Barca back in June 2008, the club have never looked back. Now only three years, but many trophies later, having perfected the ‘carpet football’ style of play he demands, there is only one question left to ask, are they the greatest team ever?

Although this is a question many football fans think to be unfair, I dont. I believe that the clubs philosophy of football, the way in which they dictate the game and the simply magnificent performances they produce every week, deserve only the highest praise, and so its only right that is exactly what they get.

Fronted by brilliant individual talents such as Lionel Messi, Xavi and Andres Iniesta, it isn’t hard to see why FC Barcelona have dominated world football in recent years, however, its the team as a whole that really impresses. The synchronized, controlled style in which they play is an honour to watch, with every player as important as the next.

It is clear for all to see that the football Barca now play is not something that is achieved overnight, it is the result of years of hard work by everyone at the club, not just the manager and players, but the coaches, scouts, medical staff and many individuals behind the scenes too. From very young ages the academy at Barcelona nurture players, they teach youngsters to play with creativity and flair, yet remain professional and determined. This has been of huge benefit to the club having produced multiple world class players and nine current first team players. These include the likes of Messi, Pique, Puyol, Iniesta, Xavi and Valdes. This on its own is a truly outstanding achievement.

I would love to hear the opinions of other fans and welcome anyone to challenge my verdict, but as I see it FC Barcelona ARE the greatest team ever.

Milan, Liverpool, Madrid teams dominated for years, not two!

Your not wrong there, however, the blog is based on which team are the greatest, not who were on top for the longest duration. This Barca team are the only team in history to have done the ‘sextuple’, winning six out of six competitions all in one year. That was in 2009, when the Guardiola era began.

    • Sanur says:

Which Milan team are you talking about?…1988-90, well they couldn’t even win their league when winning te quite easy european cup and they didn’t achieve it unbeaten either. Should have been knocked out by Red Star who were leading on aggregates with 35 mins remaining, game abandoned due to fog, the complete game is then replayed and Milan get a draw to go through. This team is the first to win EVERYTHING available to them in one calender year (Six Trophies).

I think you’ll find the Arsenal team which done the unbeaten season is the greatest ever

I think that you have got it spot on here Gary, I totally agree with what you have said.
They are most definitely the greatest team ever and in my opinion the most exciting team to watch!!

  • Mark says:

Madrid maybe?, but at that time football was amateurish my friend. Look at the fitness, tactics, spending power of opponents that Barca have to over come in the last 5 years and they haven’t done bad either. Also provided the Worlds 1,2,3 at the awards all homegrown.

    • Gary Watson says:

Couldn’t agree more with this Mark, the standard of every team has now risen and Barca have been brilliant to achieve the success they have. The style of football they have played throughout just makes it that bit greater.

I, basically being a cricket fan, was so glued to the style of football Barcelona plays… Its just ballet for me… Artistic synchronization, and I have never seen them sacrifice effectiveness of the “tiki taka” for “aesthetics”… They are just brilliant, and exceedingly eye pleasing…and skills…….absolutely outstanding… When I compare with other great teams, Man U, Real Madrid etc. they are simply much better than them as results show..
