Would this young British talent really opt for Newcastle over Tottenham?

|

An article with the following headline was recently posted on The Metro’s website: Daniel Sturridge ‘to opt for Newcastle transfer despite Spurs interest’. The article was taken down pretty quickly and at the moment clicking the link takes you to a 404 page, but it’s a provocative headline that’s sure to have Newcastle fans salivating. It begs the question though: is there any realistic chance of Sturridge joining the Magpies this summer?

I’d first note that the fact that the article was taken down isn’t a good sign. Perhaps the boys at The Metro couldn’t handle publishing an article so spurious, so void of any evidence and plausibility that they decided to remove it from the site? Given today’s media, however, I’d say that’s pretty unlikely. If I had to guess I’d say it was an article written in advance for a slow news day that got published early and pulled quickly when an editor noticed their error.

The player himself, currently employed by Chelsea but at loan at Bolton has admitted that despite his love for his parent club, “if the chances don’t come at Chelsea, then I will have to look elsewhere.” This has opened up the floodgates in terms of transfer rumours surrounding the England U21 International. It’s worth taking a look at what his motivations would be if he were to move on from Chelsea and then establishing whether Newcastle or Tottenham would be a better fit.

In a recent interview with SkySports Sturridge made it perfectly clear what his priority was for next season: “The only decision I can make is that I want to play first-team football and that’s the one that I choose to take. First-team football is very important for me next season.”

I’d argue that both Newcastle and Tottenham can offer Sturridge first-team football to exactly the same extent. If he were to join either club it’s more than likely that, performances allowing, he’d have a starting berth in the squad week-in and week-out. Newcastle United have found themselves lacking in the striking department with the sale of their £35m striker and Andy Carroll whilst Tottenham’s strikers have been firing blanks all season.

Both teams need freshening up upfront and Daniel Sturridge could be just the tonic. Given that both teams will be able to offer the striker regular first-team games, why would he opt for Newcastle over Tottenham? As things currently stand, Tottenham have a potential for a top four finish next season, whilst Newcastle will be happy with a top eight finish. In terms of aspirations, Tottenham currently offer much more than Newcastle.

If it were to come down to a choice between Newcastle and Tottenham for Daniel Sturridge, I think it’s pretty clear who he’d opt for.

  • Man on the Tyne Bridge says:

I,ll tell you why he will sign for the Toon, because if he went to spuds, he has to win his way past at least 4 maybe 5 strikers to get a regular game and he,d end up with splinters in his butt. The exact reason he wants away from Chelski. If he,s as ggood as we think he is, he,ll play EVERY week at Newcastle.
And besides youv had your flirt with the Champions League. Kiss it bye bye. HOWAY THE LADS.

    • Ged says:

As things stand, with Newcastle having only just come from the Championship one year ago, I’m not sure why any player would chose Newcastle over Spurs unless they had doubts over their own abilities.

  • YID_1978 says:

Howay all the way back to the Championship next year. Any retard who has to refere to Tottenham as the Spuds to try and make a point certainly has no class about him and probably less football knowledge!!

  • richie1892 says:

Anybody who has to result to calling someone a retard to make a point closely followed by spelling “refer” incorrectly, certainly has no class and probably less knowledge generally. “Spuds” by the way, is a common way to “refer” to Spurs amongst fans of other clubs.

    • Charlie says:

      Hehe

    • Ben says:

Anybody who has to “resort” to a phrase they’re not familiar with isn’t necessarily a grammar nazi. you, however, are.

I have no problem with this.

      • richie1892 says:

I’m not a “grammar nazi” at all mate(mines generally average at best) but if you’re going to resort to abuse to get your point across, then I think you should at least get it right.

    • bert says:

No it’s not richie darling you’re just trying to suck up to the arse..it’s like us calling you lot the skunks,I mean who else calls you that??

    • Southern Dave says:

you are just sucking up to the arse. It’s no more common than us calling you the skunks, now I ask you who else calls you that?

      • richie1892 says:

Well even a bigger lack of knowledge being displayed then, 1) I have no time for Arsenal in any way shape or form, they whinge as much as their manager does. 2) I go on many footballing blogs of different clubs and have often seen Spurs referred to as “spuds”, I’ve also seen us called “skunks” by a few teams fans and it doesn’t bother me in the slightest.

  • djg says:

I don’t think there will be as huge a gap between Spurs and Newcastle next season as some of you Spurs fans think. Especially if we can reinvest the Caroll money on good players and your lot are worn out by all the Europa league games.

  • newcastle dave says:

sick of how tottenham have one season in the champions league and think they are amazing, when you’ve been in as many times we have in the premiership you can talk but until then sit down son p.s. if it wasn’t for redknapp you’d have went down instead of us two years ago!

    • Southern Dave says:

Howay with you Davie, the squad was already in place unlike your sorry mob..Oh another outsider who thinks Redschnapps is so wonderful, just wait till he gets the England job and it will be a similar case to your messiah, walking out and admitting he couldn’t cut it..However unlike Keegan who was man enough to admit his mistakes, Arry will blame it on everyone else, like there being too many games per season, the opposition were too good,or what do England fans expect we’ve been rubbish for over 40 years.Just you wait Davey boy!!!

      • newcastle dave says:

sorry like mate but don’t mentions squads’ our squad was certainly in place are you having a laugh we had michael owen, viduka, bassong, given, smith, barton, nolan, duff are you mad how is that not a top 4 squad we just needed a good manager to join them together and you may be right about redknapp but at the end of the day you were in the bottom three now your top five so i don’t think thats a coincidence mate

  • Toon1978 says:

hahahaha how original Yid_1978. Look mate, there are other clubs outside of bloody London. Spurs want every Tom,Dick and Harry. Unfortunately Yid, you resort to petty little comments like “Howay all the way back to the Championship next year”. You sound more spiteful then my 2 year old daughter. Look, we have not had the funds to keep up with Spurs and to be quite honest i am glad we are not another one of them clubs that snaps all the talent up just for the sake of it. FORTUNATELY,i am not as petty as you Mr YIDDDO enjoy Europe and good luck for next season. All the best to the Spurs and i only hope my club NUFC can pick up from where we left off and lift our club back up. After all we have enjoyed CL Football unlike a few other clubs currently in the EPL. This article sucks as it can not stand to see any other club push on apart from the top boys and the London clubs.

  • tony says:

OOOH LOOK A DELUDED COCKNEY HOW QUAINT!!

    • Tony eats coal! says:

Is there anything so ironic, than a geordie calling anyone “deluded”? It’s years of mediocrity followed by relegation and false dawns that make you so angry and bitter isn’t it?? it’s gotta be.

      • balls says:

you think that because of your recent success you can argue that you’re a bigger club than newcastle? delusional is the fact that many of you think you’re on a par with other champions league clubs. yes you may have strung some decent performances together but lose a couple key players to injury and you have no chance. if it weren’t for so many injuries over newcastle’s season we would have finished higher than we have and i think the gap between the two teams in question is a huge amunt smaller than you make out…
i believe years of mediocrity sums you up best im afraid. sorry that you didn’t qualify this year and about that bid for the olympic stadium. must hurt. i suppose you’ll be stuck sitting down in your pokey little stadium in norff landaaaaan for several more years to come.

      • Man on the Tyne Bridge says:

Hey Tony, with a name like that, you must be full of sh!t by now.
        Come on the Barcodes. HWTL.

  • matttom says:

    Spuds, ha!

    spuds.

Using words like “retard” is not very classy. And ironic, for some spuds fans I’ve seen around WHL.

  • Man on the Tyne Bridge says:

Spuds is purely a term of endearment old chap. And to tell me I have no class when you call yoursef something as derogetary as a yid shows how little class you have yourself.
See you next year Yossa, sorry, tosser.

    • barcode says:

Oh come on geezer,if you’re trying to be smart, spell correctly..You may look like a smart dude in Low fell, but you’re on the internet now and most people can see you’re a clown with an inability to spell.

      • balls says:

oh the arrogance. a space comes after a comma. typo or have you never written properly in your life?

        • Daniel says:

A capital letter is needed at the start of every sentence. Check your writing before you post it.

      • Man on the Tyne Bridge says:

Never been to low fell. !!

  • toonlegends86 says:

lol go on the man on tyne bridge you tell that spurs idiot dannys the man to replace you no who, and take krancjar of them aswell toon toon black and white army!!

    • Man on the Tyne Bridge says:

Wouldnt that be something eh, Krancjar, back at the lane for the first time since his move to Newcastle United, scores the goal that seals Totterings fate and relegates the londoners…
Make a good hack me like.!!!!

  • Toon69 says:

The Spurts now think they’re top 4 regulars because of last season, there only problem now is, they have 5 other clubs who’re able to spend more than them & have better squads then them…

I’ll give you 14000 reasons why Danny would rather play at the Toon than at Shyte Arse Lane, it’s called having home attendance of 50k+ not just 36k…

Oh & if you’re wondering why I call you Spurts instead of Spuds like the rest, it’s because you’re 1 shot wonder when it comes to the CL.. 😉

    • Man on the Tyne Bridge says:

Ah, so thats what Arry meant when he says , :come down the lane:

  • hotdog says:

Jeez guys. Peace and love and all that.

Man on the bridge – If he’s as good as we think then surely he’ll get a game for spurs too!? Whilst i hope me opts for the toon over anyone else, spurs are at least 3 years ahead of us with a deeper squad, playing in europe – albeit channel 5 shame – and more chance of an england call. Still part of me has a feeling that Sturridge will opt for the no. 9 toon shirt – and along with Zog will be offered a bumper deal… if not surely we’ll have players coming in from the global game who are just as good, if not better.

  • jay says:

you toon fans are in a wired world!!
i wanted you lot to do well this year and was glad you stayed up but after reading you lot large it on hear i wish youd gon back down !
if spurs want him he will end up at the lane there is no contest between the clubs! you lot have no futre and have no past! is it just 1 cup you lot have wun in your how history????? championship dont count !!!! thats y your best players have always left and cum down to spurs!! or did you mugs forget that befor you started posting your shit on here?? your a big club in a small shithole city but wen it cums to being a big club………. sorry you northen inbreads you aint! thats y your always last on motd, have a good summer dreaming of signing big players, then enjoy next season with your 2bob squad hahaha
if the best you can say is you lot r spud i´ll take that on the chin all day lads

    • matttom says:

You’ve won the League twice. We’ve won it four times.

Your other comments are no less wrong and considerably more execrable.

    • balls says:

i used to like seeing tottenham do well till you became arrogant! youve been ok and suddenly you think you’re the biggest team in england! youre STILL the 2nd club in north london not to mention the rest of it. and who’s spent the most money?! so many years of success surely would have meant a new stadium by now?! oh i forget..you COULD have had the olympic stadium which a relegated team got before you…

  • Man on the Tyne Bridge says:

Don,t you just love to wind up these Tottering fans eh. Just got to touch one little raw nerve and BANG. At least we Geordies know our place in this division. You see, we have a cunning plan and a very shrewd Chairman who, by the way is a Spud, and he is going to make the sun shine all day every day.
See you boys and girls at the lane next season. The Geordies are back. HWTL.

    • Porciestreet says:

And if you thought that ash cloud was doing some damage, wrong. Cashly has opened his wallet.

  • Musicman says:

I’ve never read anything so pathetic in my life. Correcting each others spellings, Jesus !!! How old are you lot. I’m a Newcastle fan living in London and listen day in and day out to the crap spurs fans talk, and I’ve concluded that they are all bitter because Arsenal constantly have bragging rights !!! Newcastle have deserved all they’ve got over the last few years, we have been a poorly run club for a ling time and have been on the decline since Bobby was fired by that idiot Shepherd. I’m not an Ashley or Lambarse fan at all, but i will sit back and see what happens over the summer. The club do seem to be heading in the right direction, albeit slowly. I do believe however, the only reason a lot of people believe that is our expectations have been lowered. You guys stated that we’re deluded, if delusion is described as wanting your team to do well, compete, but play good football, then we are. I think you’ll find however the dictionary definition of deluded is very different………

  • davvers says:

Poor deluded Toon fans ; once again living in the shadow of the mackems – who on earth would want to join the toon with the backbiting fan base they have – they may have the numbers but certainly not the knowledge

    • Musicman says:

You need to learn how to read mate, if you bothered to do your research, you’d find out that 99% of Newcastle fans want their team to do well and play good football. We would all live to see Newcastle in Europe, and it has to be part of the plan, but what you idiots see on Sky Sports is some reporter pulls a bonehead out of pub, who’s hammered and only has two brain cells and presents him as the voice of Newcastle, I’d wager that wouldn’t be too hard to do in Tottenham, as it’s full of them

  • londontoon says:

ok all you toon fans, im from london but support newcastle myself so please dont mock me as i have heard it all before lol. as for all you spuds, you must be dillusional. you spent one season in the champions league and all of a sudden you think your great. wake up and smell the coffee. you lot are going down hill at the moment unlike the toon as we are only going up. lets sign up sturridge and n’zogbia and a few others and we will overtake the spuds with ease. CMON THE TOON

  • Chuck says:

Actually it`s only clear what your biased opinion is, nothing else !
