As the dust settles on a turbulent season for Celtic we have to look now at where the Parkhead side go from here. With no Champions League football to play next season are the purse string going to be tightened or do the club plan on strengthening for another assault on the SPL title, and bid to recapture the crown from their bitter rivals Rangers?
Neil Lennon will be buzzing with anticipation at the prospect of the new season, after clinching his first trophy as Celtic boss. This season may have had some disappointment for Neil in terms of the league going to Rangers and his off field problems, but the season could not have ended better with a 3-0 win in the Scottish Cup final against Stuart McCall’s Motherwell side.
Neil will be under no illusions at the close of the season; he has to see the Championship return to the east end of Glasgow or risk the wrath of the fan’s. The supporters have enjoyed watching some exciting football this season but that all counts for nothing if there is an empty cabinet at the end of the year.
As we look back on the season it is clear that Celtic do play some good football but are often found drawn out at the back. This could see the board splash out on a new defence and possibly a new goalkeeper as Fraser Foster has returned to Newcastle. The side are continuously linked with Shay Given although finances may dictate whatever chance Shay has of moving North of the border. With a growing confidence in his young side and if the club can keep hold of their players such as Emilio Izaguirre, Beram Kayal, Joe Ledley and Gary Hooper who are all being highly sought after.
The rumour mill has already started to run wild linking Kayal with a possible move to Manchester United, and Izaguirre has been the speculation of an £8 million move to Aston Villa. The next few months are going to be crucial for the side if the manager gets it wrong in the transfer market he could be in trouble.
With Rangers ready to strengthen their side Neil will be up against a rejuvenated Ibrox side who will be looking to clinch their 4th consecutive championship. With talk of the club ready to splash the cash as they prepare for Champions League football. Within days of the season ending its going to be a rumour-filled Summer in Scotland and we’ll wait to see if its going to be Paradise or Hell for the Celtic manager as the season pans out.
