What do Captains do? A critique of Premier League and England captains [Video Blog]

|

Though the Premier League has been graced with any number of fantastic captains, these men don’t always make the grade at international level. There’s more to being a captain than just being confident enough to shout at your team-mates when they slip-up. Great captains throughout history have inspired their ‘squadies’ not merely through their ‘vocal presence’ but also through their abilities on the pitch. This, I would argue is an area where England have fallen short – the national team is just too short of inspiration in all areas and there’s no appealing options for the captain’s armband. Things have gotten so bad that we recently saw Gareth Barry named England captain in a friendly against Ghana. If things continue along this path, I’m sure we’ll see Joey Barton instated as England captain by Euro 2012. All of which nattering brings us to this week’s video blog, as presented by Jonathan Kydd, who airs his own views on Captaincy. Today’s blog takes on these important issues:

  • What’s the role of a captain, or more precisely, what does a captain actually do?
  • What’s the position most becoming of a Captain?
  • Does ‘vocal presence’ on the pitch have as much importance as we like to think?
  • Also: Jonathan Kydd offers a belated take on John Terry’s re-appointal as England captain and whether Fabio Capello was right to reinstate him.
