Most transfer rumour articles don’t bother providing their readers with any substantial evidence or even quotes that grant their contents a certain degree of veracity. When they do, however people tend to sit up and pay attention. That is, at least, when the quote in question is relevant and hasn’t been twisted out of all proportion as has been the case here.
A headline in The Telegraph during the week read: ‘Sir Alex Ferguson would love to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo’. Now there’s two ways to interpret that statement. Either that Sir Alex Ferguson remains sane and understands that Ronaldo would be an asset to his team, or that Sir Alex Ferguson is seriously considering making a move for the ex-Manchester United star currently plying his trade at Real Madrid.
Whilst The Telegraph just reported the facts, the boys at TribalFootball twisted the story until they arrived at the headline: “Ferguson IS plotting sensational return of Real Madrid star Ronaldo”. The only thing sensationalist about the article is the huge assumption at its centre: just because Sir Alex Ferguson would love to re-sign Ronaldo, it doesn’t follow that he’s ‘plotting’ to do so.
Let’s have a look at the quotes that provide the evidence for the story. According to Marco Lippi, former Italy and Juventus coach and a friend of Sir Alex, the Manchester United boss said: “Sir Alex told me he would take Ronaldo back tomorrow. We both think he is an extraordinary striker who can start on either wing, or as the sole striker and perform brilliantly. But the truly remarkable thing about Cristiano is that he always scores.”
He’s not stating anything out of the ordinary here. Yes, Cristiano Ronaldo is a fantastic player and it’s hardly a surprise that Ferguson would take him back at United. At no point does he reveal that Manchester United are currently in the process of attempting to bring Ronaldo back to Old Trafford.
Yes there has been talk that Cristiano Ronaldo is unsettled at Real Madrid, but he’s their most important footballer and I have no doubt that Jose Mourinho will be taking pains this summer to ensure that he’s happy and that his qualms are all dealt with. The fact of the matter remains that United simply don’t have the cash to buy Ronaldo back off of Madrid. Only Manchester City have the funds necessary to tempt the star into a move, but it’s unlikely that he’d move to a Manchester team that doesn’t play in red.
As such, you can expect Cristiano to remain a Real Madrid player for quite some time, despite what TribalFootball may claim.
