Media Watch: Manchester City will make a £55m for Barcelona star

|

I would say that you couldn’t make it up, but that’d be to severely underestimate the creativity of the folks who manufacture and produce bogus transfer rumours such as this one on a daily basis. But with silly season fast approaching, the rags are working over-time cooking up the kind of rumours that would have you salivating if they weren’t so clearly an act of pure creation rather than genuine reporting. Which brings us to this rumour from the boys over at Caughtoffside: Manchester City will attempt to woo Andres Iniesta away from Barcelona this summer with a £55m bid.

Where’s the basis for this story? Why on earth would Barcelona be willing to sell one of their top players to Manchester City? Why would Iniesta want to leave the most successful club in the world to a club that’s on the rise but not quite there yet? No quotes or sources are provided, so we are left to presume that the article was an act of pure fiction.

It’s almost as laughable as the articles that appeared on various sites last week suggesting that City were going to attempt to sign Cesc Fabregas and Xavi. Iniesta and Xavi are the heart of Barcelona’s team and there’s no chance that Pep Guardiola will be willing to sell these two on any time in the near future. Both players are playing all the time for the best club in the world and are already on a very good wage. What impetus do they have to move?

What’s more, Cesc Fabregas has claimed on a couple of occasions that he’ll only ever play for Arsenal or Barcelona and he’s clearly a footballer who’s not motivated by money.

Now that Manchester City have claimed Champions League football, there’s a frustrating tendency amongst the media to suggest that they need to make two-or-three ‘marquee’ signings. Despite being thrown together, this team was strong enough to claim Champion’s League football. Who says that with more time to gel together and become more of a unit that this team will not continue to improve?

Surely the time is right to introduce a degree of stability and regularity at Manchester City. Not that that will prevent articles appearing on certain sites next week that suggest City are weighing up a £100m move for Barca’s Lionel Messi.

THERE ARE £55 Millions reasons 😉

  • Yellow gold about to fold says:

Cecs Fabregas with one of the best teams in the World? Check the Premier table to confirm who is in third position will you.

As for being thrown together you clearly wrote this some time last summer. Arsenal are coming apart at the seams and need a major rebuilding exercise. City are coming together faster than a United fan leaving wembley after they were put to the sword by City.

I do find it strange when someone writes a whole article on silly rumours but clearly doesnt have a clue what he is talking about.
