Media Watch: Arsenal star intrigued by potential move to Manchester United

|

Samir Nasri was the star of the first-half of Arsenal’s season (y’know, the half of the season full of optimism and joy that soon came crashing down after their woeful turn at the Carling Cup final) but could well be about to jump ship this summer. There have long been reports that Nasri’s contract talks with the Gunners have come to a halt and as time goes on it begins to look more and more likely that the Frenchman will seek a future elsewhere.

According to L’Equipe Nasri has become frustrated at Arsenal’s lack of success and would be willing to consider a move to Manchester United, should the correct reassurances not be given regarding Arsenal’s future. With Nasri’s contract with the Gunners up at the end of next season, Arsene Wenger would have to sell his French star at a cut price or lose him for nothing next summer.

Now just because it’s a French paper running a story about a French player, doesn’t grant it any further plausibility. L’Equipe is just as credible as any of our papers, which is to say: not very. I simply can’t see Samir Nasri going to Manchester United. If you recall the whole Nasri-Gallas debacle you’ll remember that Nasri isn’t one to let go of a grudge easily and as such probably isn’t a big fan of Manchester United or any of Arsenal’s other main rivals.

L’Equipe provide no quotes and offer no real story. It’s clear that something’s going on behind the scenes and that Arsenal are going to have to offer a pay-rise if they want to keep him at the club but to suggest that he’s going to make a move to one of Arsenal’s biggest rivals seems a little far-fetched.

If Nasri does move on this summer, I expect Wenger will make sure it’s to foreign climbs and not to a Premier League club. There’s no chance that Arsene will let one of his best players jump ship and join Manchester United this summer.

The trouble is that the tabloids realise that a player has a solitary year left on their contracts and jump at the opportunity to suggest that they are ‘holding the club to ransom’ or ‘engineering a move out the club’. At the moment it’s all hearsay and rumour and should be treated as such.

Nasri has the right to negotiate a better deal at the club and I’m sure both club and player will come to an agreement.
