How long should Tottenham continue to commit themselves to someone who isn’t committed to them?

|

Harry Redknapp is one of those lads who just can’t settle down. He’s the Barney Stinson of football managers, moving from one conquest to another. He seems to stay at a club long enough to have proved himself worthy before moving onto bigger and better things. I don’t want to sound too frivolous here because footballing allegiances and loyalty is a big deal amongst fans. Yet can any Spurs fans really claim that they think Harry is committed to their club?

It’s widely acknowledged by fans and the man himself that Harry is ready to jump ship should the England managerial position suddenly become available. That’s been hanging over Tottenham fan’s heads for such a long time now that it’s become a widely acknowledged fact; something I’d argue isn’t healthy for the club’s outlook.

But what if a bigger club than Tottenham were to make a cheeky bid for his services? What if the likes of Chelsea were to start making enquiries? Can Tottenham fans really expect that Harry would stay loyal? He’s an ambitious man and will look to make his home the club that offers the best chance of success.

His lack of commitment to the Tottenham cause was on evidence during the whole phone-in debacle. When fans called up a radio station to complain about Spurs’ lack of form, Redknapp responded: Who rings up a radio station to talk about football? Idiots.”

Charming. People who care enough about their club to call into a radio station and discuss its shortcomings are quite likely the people who care about the club the most. To belittle them in such an off-hand matter strikes me as a sign that his relationship with Tottenham fans is strained to say the least.

For all the success that Harry has brought Tottenham this season, the fans are hungry for more. Yet Harry Redknapp chastised fans for thinking above their station: what did they expect, for us to finish ahead of Arsenal, United, Chelsea or City?”

My response to that question would be: why not? Tottenham have a fantastic squad and if emphasis had been placed on domestic performance above European exploits, I’m sure that Spurs could have cracked the top four once more. For me, Harry Redknapp’s comments showcase a lack of ambition and a lack of empathy with the fans.

For all his flaws, however, I’m not sure that Tottenham would be able to find a better manager. He’s brought them this level of success and with some fine tuning may well be able to maintain it and build upon it. That doesn’t change the fact that Spurs are in an uncomfortable position. They’re committed to a manager that has no real commitment to them. It’s tough to build for the future when you don’t know what the future will bring.

What’s your take? Is Harry Redknapp committed to Tottenham? Is there a better man for the Spurs job than Harry?

  • rich g says:

sack him now, before he shits on us either for the chavs, or the england job, btw, he isnt good enough for either job

  • goog says:

Its a hard issue to call, he has been brilliant for us
Saving relegation to Champions league QF etc
but his relationship with the fans is like walking on eggshells. All the spurs fans have to do is boo a referee at home and his starts slagging them for booing the team. The fans are the main thing for me and he strikes me as someone who beleives he is bigger than the club. If chelsea want him fair enough have him but get it done by monday.
have fun with some ridiculous transfer market ambitions Craig Bellamy WTF!

finish above the current top 3…why not? are you off your head?!? because we don’t have the credentials. simple as that. We almost do. But to win the league takes more than a good number of stellar performances. It takes consistency, which takes a certain kind of mindset. That only gets achieved by experience. How many times have we seen ManU go behind in a game only to whittle down the opposition and get the win? Truckloads. That’s what makes them champions. Our run in the CL was a dream run, much like a team from a lower division having a dream run in the cup. Great when it happens, but not a reflection of their credentials. Having said this, we played a lot of massive games, a lot more games than ‘normal’, showed a lot of heart, and grit and we finished 5th with a large number of first team players in the treatment room. If I was Harry, I would have used far less flattering words than ‘idiot’ to describe people who want to have an opinion about something far more complex than they can comprehend. The guy has taken us from the pits of the premier league on a dream run in the CL to finish 5th this season. Ask your local bookie what odds he would have given you on that when Harry became manager. Then start shouting sack the manager, or just come back with your tail between your legs and write how sorry you are for being an over zealous, knee jerk knob jockey.

    utter crap!!
he won’t go to chelski as he won’t put up with abramovic’s interference & he won’t do the england job ‘cos the FA would never get someone in who’s got possible ‘skeletons in cupboards’ ….. or a mind of their own

We have a manager who broke us into the top 4, who helps us play some of the best football in the league and we want to sack him! Typical Spurs! The fact that Chelsea are looking at him shows how much he has done for spurs and we should at least appreciate that instead of slating him. This is the first time he has had a job at a big team like Tottenham and its his first Champions League- he IS GOING TO MAKE MISTAKES! We as fans need to be patient and allowing him to make these mistakes and make us a better team!Sir Alex is not the manager the he is now without making mistakes. You do know that if Redknapp does leave, Bale, Modric, van der Vaart, Sandro are all going to be on their way with him especially if Harry leaves to club football!

Harry would be very difficult to replace. His work here is undervalued. He’s a Londener and they’re well known for their lack of proper English – they don’t explain clearly or hit the nail on the head. He’s not criticizing those that phone-in per se, but those that think we SHOULD get top4 and all else is total failure, and those that don’t appreciate where he’s brought us. It’s clear what he means, it’s just the way he says things. He’s as committed to Spurs as he could be. How committed would a Spurs fan be at Westham? Hopefully professional, at least.

  • Paul says:

For me.. he should go. His record in the last half of the season was appalling. How many of the so called top 4 managers, probably including Dalglish, would have gone 12-13 games with one win? The top managers in the world would have fixed the problem pretty damn quick. No way would the like of Ferguson, Ancelotti, Wenger, Mourhino and many others to be honest have gone for so many games firing blanks..one win in 13 for gods sake! Rednapp has gone as far as he could with Spurs but his tactics and results after January were nothing short of attrocious. He calls fans that phone in idiots??!! Sack him and spend the same money on a manager you would on a world class player. Its time to move up a gear and Rednapp proved he didnt have the skills to capitalise on the fact that we had Champions league football and also that he has had at his disposal one the best Spurs squads EVER.

not buyin in to that for a second: in this life you get what you deserve and often deserve what you get! insulting fans, especially without remorse, care or regret, is not what someone who earns a fraction to what e does, should have to hear. He is so dilluded about his actual value ‘on the whole’ that I was not surprised to hear him ridicule those tht love the club(unlike him) and those that pay blindly(through devotion)to a cause that has been ‘in the blood’ for decades..club over twat any day, irrespective of who ITV, the SUN and sky have made hom up to become. Jordan without the tits- fergie without the trophy’s or success or legacy or desire…pack his bags, as we will rip apart what we have now been putting together since 2005.

  • seantheyid says:

dont sack the saggy face c***, let chelski come in for him & then tuck them up for a big compo pay off, like we did for arnesen.

  • Next bus to Woolwich! says:

I think there are others who are more than capable of achieving what he did..To criticise his own fans so publicaly and damningly was despicable and unwarranted. It was only him saying a few months ago, that we have a PL title in us,and then backtracks and aks us how can we expect us to finish above certain clubs?? He never seems to accept any blame for his obvious shortcomings. If he wants to go then let him.!!
