Does this young talent stand a chance at Arsenal?

|

With the recent news that Arsenal haven’t granted Carlos Vela the chance to join the Mexican National team for this summer’s Copa America, the signs are there that Arsene Wenger is finally ready to give the 22-year-old a fair shot. After a loan move to West Bromwich Albion failed to provide Vela with the game time he and Arsenal would have been hoping for and with Valenica and Anderlecht both thought to be interested in the player, this would appear to be Vela’s last big chance to impress at Arsenal.

Fans tend to go back and forth when it comes to Vela. Yes he has been with Arsenal now for six years and only managed to impress sporadically, but this is largely down to a lack of opportunity. Without a consistent run of games in the squad, he’s never really had any opportunity to develop any form. You can be the best player in the world, but if you’re not granted a certain number of games, the likelihood is that you’re going to look rusty when called upon – as has been the case for Vela this season.

Still it’s worth questioning why he hasn’t found success just yet. Why hasn’t Wenger – a great judge of young talent – afforded him opportunity? Why hasn’t he been able to get a game for West Brom during his loan spell?

The trouble with Carlos Vela is that despite his obvious talent, he has failed to deliver time and time again. People may say that he’s been limited to cameo roles and substitute appearances – well that’s because when he was given an opportunity in the past, he’s spurned it. I’m not sure why he hasn’t produced the goods just yet: could it be a lack of desire? A lack of confidence? It surely can’t be a lack of ability.

When he’s on song he’s a top player, but when he’s off his game, he looks slight and is easily knocked off the ball. So the question is: where is there space in this Arsenal squad for Carlos Vela? Unless Samir Nasri or Andrey Arshavin leave this summer, I doubt he’ll get any game time on the flanks, especially with Theo Walcott vying for the position too.

Is he ready to take on a role as a striker? From what we’ve seen so far of the youngster (or to put it more aptly – haven’t seen) he just doesn’t seem ready. Arsenal need a proven striker to partner Robin Van Persie up front and Carlos Vela just isn’t that man.

Arsene Wenger may have chosen to keep hold of Vela this summer but I can’t help but wonder if it would be best for club and player alike if he moved on to new pastures before next season. He needs regular game time and that’s something that Arsenal just wont be able to guarantee him.

i realy hope carlos gets to stay at arsenal and prove to arsene how good he is and how much hes improved, he could be a brilliant player and hes a great guy, has a bubbly personality and the right temprement for arsenal, when hes played he realy goes for it, he doesnt give up, i know he hasnt scored that many goals for arsenal but they have been top draw goals.

    • Davi says:

If you took his goals:minutes for arsenal, I expect it would be as good as anyone else. Better than a lot of the attackers who get in ahead of him anyway.

  • inno says:

de guy is gud lets keep him and loan him out in a team dat wil gaurantee him 1st team sheet

  • skwam says:

he is needed for medicals, avoid injury and to sign paper work when he is sold…

  • Tommo says:

    He’s holding incase Nasrii goes.

  • MistaKen says:

Cant work this guy out. He looks a good player but doesn’t get enough chances for me to say if we should keep him or not. Anyway, been thinking a long time we should buy a proper right winger and play Walcott up front. He turns and shoots real quick

it hurts when i see hernandez doin so well straight away, especially when he is similar size and speed as vela. i believe he will be good enough one day but being 4th or sth choice on our bench wont help much. difficult one

  • George McNeil says:

I feel Vela lacks the tenacity and temperament to succeed at Arsenal. Too many games he disappears, and it was very telling that WBA aren’t too interested in him anymore.

I can’t recall an important goal from Vela where the score wasn’t 3-0 +

    • Baggie Dave says:

Vela had good cameo roles for the Baggies…and his last gasp equalizer against the Dingles (WWFC) will ensure he is always in the hearts of Baggies fans. He also scored a late goal at Stoke in a 1-1 draw. I would question his desire, he has the ability but I would not want him in my team when the going gets tough 🙂

  • Hailpantani says:

I think Vela was very unlucky at Albion. We weren’t playing with two outright forwards and with Odemwingie in sparkling form this didn’t give Vela many chances.

  • Hailpantani says:

Also meant to say that when he did get the chance, against our arch-enemies Wolverhampton W***ers, he scored a great opportunist goal right after coming on. He has a great touch and will do well in a confident attacking top side. Albion are a good team but not yet good enough to play him every game. Arsenal should put him in the first team and persevere – he will produce the goods.

alot of gooners seem to forget about odemwingie. they thought vela should just walk into your 1st team. odemwingie is quality, one of my fave performers this season

This guy has often been played out of position. When he comes on as a sub the playing time is limitd and yet he is expected to perform miracles.Wenger has overbought kids and it is about time he changes tack.
Btw read the ugly british bull dog claiming the epl is between his team and Chelsea. hope his team reaches the next two cl final and lose. That would be my greatest joy. His condescending reflects that of his master. The latter is trying to devise ways to bring Barca a notch down. He cannot stomach th e pain of the cl loss similar to the ones he inflicts in the epl. The only difference is in the epl, the match officials can be sidered his 12/13 player.

  • Wolfgang Senor says:

In the past Wenger criticized teams like MC and Chelsea for financial doping. Then he was against spending on players. He is entitled to his opinion. The fact is fd has enabled MC to win the FA Cup and Chelsea get 2nd place.
It would be fair to say given the limitations of the present Arsenal squad,Wenger has to spend. If not the gunners could be relegated to mid table status. By the gap would be so wide that throwing billions may not be enough.Trillions would have to be spent to go back to the present status.
As for MC and Chelsea they are looking to take the fd further by buying big name players.

  • wba wakeman says:

could be such a good player, but at the albion he often looked weak and disinterested, hes your arsenal player, great pass and touch, but when the going gets tough hes certainly not your man
