Media Watch: Tottenham to beat Chelsea to £17.5m rated Belgian wonderkid

|

Romely Lukaku off to Spurs?Romelu Lukaku was a name brought up a lot during the January transfer window, usually in conjunction with Chelsea or Manchester United. Now, however, according to the Daily Mail, it’s Tottenham who are in the hot-seat to receive the 17-year-old’s signature. The paper reports that Spurs boss Harry Redknapp has been frustrated with his side’s strikeforce and will be looking to make amends come the summer.

Indeed, between them, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe and Roman Pavlyuchenko have scored only 27 goals in all competitions this season – a tally that does not match with Tottenham’s grand ambitions.

So whilst I have no doubt that changes will be made to Tottenham’s attack come the summer, I have my doubts whether a deal will ever be struck between Spurs and Lukaku’s club Anderlecht.

Tottenham’s problems upfront have been well documented. I firmly believe that Harry Redknapp and Daniel Levy should have done something about their strikeforce during the January transfer window – but that doesn’t change the fact that actions will be taken this summer.

My doubt springs from the fact that it’s unlikely the Spurs board, or the fans will view a 17-year-old as the solution to their problems. For all his talent and ability, he’s unproven outside of Belgium and will not provide Tottenham with the instant fix they desire. Whilst signing an experienced striker isn’t always the answer (Torres, Dzeko, etc) going for youth would be the wrong move.

Tottenham need to show their aspiration both on the pitch and off it and that will require making good transfer decisions.

I’d also worry about Lukaku’s form. The Belgian has scored 12 times for Anderlecht and twice for his national side, but has only managed to score three times since Christmas. When you’re that young there’s no guarantee that you’ll ever recapture that kind of form again.

I’m also curious to know what happened to the interest from Chelsea, Manchester United and Manchester City. He was a hot prospect during the January transfer window and now all of a sudden Tottenham are the forerunners for his signature?

Given that there are no quotes or firm evidence presented with the Mail’s story, I’d say it’s safe to remain fairly sceptical about Tottenham’s interest.
