Media Watch: Chelsea plotting sensational bid for £40m rated Tottenham star

|

Tottenham's Gareth Bale will face Real Madrid in the quarter finals of the Champion's LeagueThe newly crowned PFA Player of the Year Gareth Bale is now a world-wide sensation and the headlines and transfer rumours continue to role in regarding Tottenham’s star winger on a daily basis. Summer hasn’t even begun yet and I’m already beginning to tire of the rumours linking the Welsh wizard to all and sundry. The latest transfer link concerning Gareth Bale (though I’m sure by the time you’ve finished reading this a publication somewhere will have run with a new rumour) is a particularly irksome one and worth discussing.

If you believe the papers, Chelsea are weighing up a summer-bid for Gareth Bale of about £40m. The story has been reported in both the Daily Mail and The Mirror, but that doesn’t mean we should give it too much credence. I have no doubt that the likes of Roman Abramovich and Carlo Ancelotti have been watching Gareth Bale’s progress this season with interest – as has most of the footballing world. I’m sure they’ve been particularly impressed with Bale’s performances in Europe, where they are desperate for success. However, I doubt that this interest would translate into a genuine desire to make a bid for the Welshman’s services.

The Mirror suggests that if Tottenham were to cash-in on Gareth Bale, they’d look for something in the region of £40-50m. But that’s just the thing: Tottenham won’t be looking to cash-in on Gareth Bale this summer. Whether they earn Champion’s League football or not next season, they’ll be looking to keep hold of their best players and develop a more competitive squad for next season.

Harry Redknapp and Daniel Levy view Gareth Bale as essential to Spurs’ progress to becoming a top side with good reason. He has the quality and ability to take Tottenham to the next level. There’s no reason in the world to suggest that they would be willing to sell their star player to a rival team. Tottenham will be looking to displace Chelsea and Arsenal and assert themselves as the top team in London over the next two-three seasons and won’t want to give Chelsea a huge advantage by letting Gareth Bale join them.

If Tottenham do look to cash-in on Gareth Bale and it’s a big if – I expect that Bale will move abroad, perhaps to Barcelona. Given that Bale recently signed a new four-year deal with Tottenham that’s seeing him pick up £60k a week, it’s clear that he’s currently happy at the club. I’d give this transfer rumour about as much credence as the recent “John Terry set to join Real Madrid” headline that has been doing the rounds over the last few days. It’s simply not going to happen.
