Media Watch: And the next Tottenham manager is… David Moyes

|

David Moyes and his side Everton continue to suffer for the events of 2005This is a strange one and one that could stir up quite a negative reaction amongst Tottenham fans. Goal.com exclusively reported yesterday that Tottenham are lining up incumbent Everton manager David Moyes to succeed Harry Redknapp when the Spurs manager eventually leaves to join the England set-up.

The rumour follows fears that Fabio Capello could be forced to leave his role as England boss before the end of his contract (which runs until the end of Euro 2012). The belief is that should Capello’s England pick up a string of bad results in the near future, the FA would quickly lose patience with the Italian and seek to bring in Harry Redknapp to steady the ship.

There is said to be some worry that England will fail to qualify for Euro 2012, just as Steve McClaren’s England failed to qualify for Euro 2008. The way that Capello has handled the England captaincy issue is also said to have raised some eyebrows amongst those in the FA.

Of course, Redknapp has made it clear that should Capello depart from his role as England manager, he’d be more than happy to take the reins in his place. This has left Spurs fans with a constant niggling worry that their manager could be off at any time.

Which brings us to David Moyes. Goal.com would have us believe that Tottenham have given hard thought to the issue and produced a shortlist of potential candidates for the managerial role. At the top of the list, it is claimed, is Everton’s very own David Moyes.

Moyes has been boss of Everton since 2002 and has done rather well with the meagre means the club has provided him with. But is he really the kind of manager that Tottenham fans would be keen to see in charge of their club? Despite past achievements, Everton have looked more than a little lacklustre this season – with Moyes himself taking a fair amount of criticism for his side’s lack of success.

One thing I’d worry about if I were a Tottenham fan in regards to Moyes is whether he has a capacity for maintaining success. Yes, he brought Everton into the Champion’s League back in 2005 (a remarkable feat, no doubt) but every season since then has seen Everton take a step backwards. As Tottenham seek to establish themselves as big names on the European stage, I have to question whether Moyes is really the right man for the job.

Do his tactics befit Tottenham’s style of football? Would he play to Tottenham’s strengths? The answer in both cases, I fear, is no. I’d much rather see Bolton’s (that’s the same Bolton that are ahead of Everton in the Premier League this season) Owen Coyle in charge at spurs when Harry leaves. He has an attacking ethos that would resonate well amongst fans and has proven already that he can make the most of whatever materials and tools he is provided with.

Whether the rumour has any substance remains to be seen – but that doesn’t make it any less of a disheartening proposition for Spurs fans.

“but every season since then has seen Everton take a step backwards”

What a clueless comment. These crap websites are a joke.

Look, there’s no denying Coyle would make a fine replacement for Harry if he keeps his success with Bolton going. But that’s exactly the point-he needs to keep that success going. He’s had two good seasons with Burnley, dragged Bolton out of the relegation mire they were battling and now has them challenging for Europe. Impressive, but can he keep it up? Remember, many Tottenham supporters said that Redknapp wasn’t capable of leading us to the next level since he’d never managed there before, only sscrapped around in the lower reaches of the table with the likes of Spam and Portsmouth. The same questions will arise about Owen Coyle.

utter tripe. harry buys 10 players a season (obviously a number of them are youth team buys but none the less he can afford error). moyes is given f all season in, season out. everton have not gone backwards, others have invested more heavily than previous years.

Everton play an attractive passing game, and have found it difficult to break sides down this season, but that doesnt take away from moyes’ achievement (having spent £900,000 in the summer).

Moyes is a far, far better manager than Redknapp. Quite frankly I would be horrified if Everton got rid of Moyes and replaced him with a corrupt money waster like Redknapp. He spends on lots of young talent from the lower leagues (most recently the “Kyle’s” who he stole from Moyes’ grasps after Everton had had bids accepted), but recieves great praise for the few that come off. With the Bale deal Spurs’ fans note what a great buy, but then refuse to comment on the signings of Routledge or Bentley who failed as dramatically as the (overrated) Bale has succeeded.

If you were to get Moyes, and I would be shocked, you should be grateful. Having said that, Coyle is an outstanding manager who I rate very highly, and if Moyes did leave Everton, I would hope that he would be top of our list
