The Gunners were once again forced to show their resilience in the Premier League after managing to bag a hard fought 2-1 victory over struggling Everton at the Emirates last night.
Arsenal went into last night’s match in great form and spirits following their 2-1 F.A Cup win over League One minnows Huddersfield Town last Sunday, but as we all know about the Gunners home record this season.
Everton were well organised in the first 45, and were clearly on top of things in the midfield department. With Arsenal struggling to settle and play their flowing football, it was David Moyes’s side that took the lead, through what had to be the most controversial goal of the season so far. Seamus Coleman played a through ball, which hit Laurent Koscielny and landed at Louis Saha’s feet. The French striker took his goal well in the 24th minute, but was clearly 2-3 yards offside.
Arsenal went into the break a goal down thanks to Lee Mason and his lino’s inability to call a clear-cut decision.
Wenger’s men came out knowing that anything but a win would have evidently damaged their Premier League title credentials. The Gunners pressed and pressed Everton, who were comfortable to sit back with what they had, but with all their attacking play nothing transpired. However, after coming on for Tomas Rosicky in the 62nd minute, Andrey Arshavin equalised for the Gunners 8 minutes later with a composed finish. Having broke Everton’s resistance, 6 minutes later, Laurent Koscielny rose to header in the winner from a Robin Van Persie cross.
It wasn’t what you would call a vintage performance by the Gunners, but it was a great fight-back. Undoubtedly, Arsenal displayed the battling characteristics needed to be crowned potential Premier League champions, and the Arsenal faithful will be hoping to see their team continue their good form.
With all their title rivals recording victories last night, the 2-1 win over Everton proved to be a crucial one for Arsene’s army and their title hopes. Let’s just hope we don’t make it so difficult for ourselves next time round.
