Excuse after excuse wearing thin at Liverpool

|

Written by Tom Costello

Roy Hodgson’s time at Liverpool has been a disaster for one reason or another. He looks a manager out of his depth, devoid of tactical knowledge and Liverpool are a club lacking an inspirational leader. Liverpool’s new owners, NESV have accepted that it will take time to rebuild Liverpool, and the vast majority of fans agree that this is a fair assessment. However, will Liverpool continue to take steps backwards, rather than forwards, if they continue with Roy Hodgson at the helm?

The problem with Roy Hodgson is there is one excuse after another. If he isn’t blaming Rafa Benitez for the failings of the club he is blaming players’ fitness or the lack of funds that he was given in the summer. Now, he may be right on all of these points but he has continued to roll off excuse after excuse. If you are managing a team like Liverpool and you have taken 22 points from 17 games, languishing only six points off the drop zone at Christmas, you have to take responsibility for that. Hodgson is seemingly incapable of doing this.

In terms of transfers, Liverpool need to invest this January. They need to add some extra quality to their first team as well as buying younger players for the future. It is looking increasingly likely that they will lose Glen Johnson this January. If last summer is anything to go buy, Liverpool fans can’t get too excited about this transfer window. Last summer Roy Hodgson purchased Paul Konchesky and Christian Poulsen – for Liverpool? They would be decent signings for Fulham but not acceptable for a club like Liverpool. Does Roy Hodgson really have the foresight in the transfer market to achieve the results that the new owners expect? When you waste nearly £9m, it scares you when Tottenham were able to sign William Gallas for free and Rafael van der Vaart for £8m. Even more worrying for Liverpool fans is Hodgson’s hint that he may not even buy in January.

“Clubs have virtually been destroyed by people making bad decisions. It’s not because the owners haven’t given money or supported the manager. It’s just that they have brought in the wrong people.”

At the biggest clubs in the world, there is expectation. The question is, have Liverpool fans and the press been too harsh on Roy Hodgson? He only arrived in July and to be totally fair he has had very very little money (whatever money he has had, he has wasted) to shape a squad in his vision. He hasn’t had the chance to work with Damien Comolli on transfer targets. This is a fair argument, but to be given time you need to have shown somewhere that you deserve it. Has Hodgson done anything that says he is the man to turn Liverpool around? A very impressive win against Chelsea, and that is it. It is time for John W. Henry and Tom Werner to seriously consider Roy Hodgson’s position. They were incredibly awkward in the recent fans phone-in when asked about Hodgson’s future. They would make themselves very popular with Liverpool fans if they were to fire Roy Hodgson sooner rather than later.

Liverpool are in a transitional phase, but that does not mean they have to be where they are in the table. It is becoming too easy for Roy Hodgson to make excuse after excuse and not take responsibility for his own shortcomings. He sounds like a product of Tom Hicks and George Gillet at the moment. Roy Hodgson is out of his depth at Liverpool in terms of the transfer market and on the pitch. Do Liverpool fans really think that if NESV gave Hodgson a vast amount of money he would be able to attract top names? When a club needs to rebuild, it needs to get rid of deadwood. Sadly, Roy Hodgson is part of this deadwood and he will take Liverpool backwards before any progress is made.

Got to agree Hodgson must go now. Give him his P45 for Christmas.

  • Red Sky says:

please do not give him any money to spend. He seems to be targeting mid table players that would be really good for Fulham…someone get rid of this twit.

  • Bill says:

    Red Sky

I could think of a better word than twit by changing just one letter LOL.

i want NESV to give him a chance cauz liverpool performing this bad aint his fault..benitez destroyed the liverpool squad,by not signing players for the bench and playing the likes of Degen and Voronin..and to those wanting benitez to return i’d say that i would never support liverpool if that happened..benitez is one of the worst managers ever to manage liverpool and the miracle of istanbul was down to Houlliers players!!Gerrard,Hyypia,Carragher,Riise,Dudek..except for Xabi Alonso, werent these the best players that season??he’s already destroyed european champions,Inter, and he has also destroyed us..he’ll need time to recover and you still want him bacK??FAT F**K STAY AWAY FROM LIVERPOOL

Houlliers players, which Rafa got the best out of and got to 2 finals won 1 and only just lost the other. He turned Biscan and Traore into something we never saw under Houllier. Rafa inherited Houlliers players added 3-4 of his own and took us to 2 finals, Roy inherited Rafas players, shipped a few decent players out signed some jokes and made the team stop playing and made excuse after excuse after every game. You serious deluding yourself if your thinking Roys going to win the league or anything else with LFC its like Man Utd replacing Fergie with Mick Mcarthy or Big Sam it will never happen, so why should we settle for not 2nd best but 1 of the worst British managers there is……SACK ROY, BRING BACK THE JOY

  • jo says:

I dont if I am getting this right.
If Hodgson inherited a mess at Liverpool and thats why they are struggling. Could we not do the same about Fulham.
In this case it means Hodgson messed up Fulham and Mark Hughes has been left to deal with that hence the reason Fulham are not in the bottom 3 on goal difference only.
Over 3 seasons Fulham was built in Hodgson’s image hence any subsequent problems point to this same man who is scrapping the bottom of the barrel to find excuses for everything by blaming everyone around him.
According to Broughton on appointing Hodgson, they feted him as an amazing manager who would motivate the players and do the best possible on little on or no budget.
Sadly the people who punished us for supporting the club have all left and we stand to lose a generation of new fans because we seem to play like a pub team.

What aload of bollocks stavoros, roy inherited a team with three world class players and two just below world class he brought in that idiot left back and the dane and a mireles the man is not good enough to be a liverpool manager as long as he has a hole in his arse as for rafa leaving the club in a mess you plonker he had to sell to survive under tom and jerry look up the facts on what rafa spent and what he recouped and you will find that in six years he spent 70 million pound 23 of that on nando he reorganised the youth set up to were it is today were we have some great tallent coming through so get your facts right stavaros or suck a lolly pop like your brother telly

  • Sean says:

Hodgson shouldn’t be given time, he should be doing time for crimes against football. The sooner this clown is kicked out of Anfield the better.

  • Poor scouser tommy says:

Stavros what a load of crap your spouting. You obviuosly have ne football knowledge. Hodgson will never be fit to lace Rafas boots. 2 champions league finals (1 the most famous victory in liverpool history)& FA cup. He gave us our pride to be able to say we have won 5 big ones, putting us in an elite of 3 clubs having won it that many times. He left hodgeson with Reine, Torres, Gerrard. A youth system that is seeing future tallent starting to emerge (remember they will be rafas youth not hodgsons).
Now for Hodgsons record. Our lowest possition in the league since moses was alive,a team devoid of ideas, 2 signings that my mum would have had more sense not to sign.
God help us if the Pr*ck carries on mamnaging us.
