This season has been something of a mixed bag for The Red Devils. Louis Van Gaal has managed to get his side back into contention for a Champions League slot next year, but he’s also frustrated with his tactics. He seems to be intent on building a Manchester United side that’s deadly dull and relatively ineffectual upfront.
One of the club’s major problems is their lack of quality centre backs. Last summer they let both Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic go. Unfortunately, the defensive recruits that they brought in just haven’t been up to snuff. As a result, this is likely to be an area of the pitch that Van Gaal re-assesses during the summer transfer window.
This must also explain why Manchester United continue to pick up links to Real Madrid’s defensive prodigy, Raphael Varane. The Frenchman’s only 21-years-old, but he’s already regarded as one of the best centre-backs in Europe.
This is likely down to his pace (he’s seriously nippy for a defender), his defensive nous (he’s a smart cookie), his power and presence and his strength in the air. If he continues to develop at his current rate, there’s a good chance that he’s going to blossom into one of the world’s best.
As you might expect, Varane isn’t going to come cheap. According to The Metro, if Manchester United are intent on signing the Frenchman, they’re going to have to cough up at least £30m. Luckily, the player himself does seem to be keen on the move. The source suggests that he has ‘his heart set on a move to Old Trafford’.
If this is true, Van Gaal would be foolish not to act. There are few better defenders in world football than Raphael Varane. If he actively wants to be a part of this Manchester United side, it would be a shame to miss out.
