There have been some who have lauded Manchester United’s performances in recent weeks. There are fans who claim that The Red Devils performances against Chelsea (a late 1-1 draw) and Manchester City (a gutsy 0-1 defeat with ten men) demonstrated the progress that the club had made under Louis Van Gaal.
But given how much money the club has spent in recent times and the collection of players that The Dutchman already had at his beck and call, shouldn’t they be doing better? Shouldn’t they be challenging at the head of the table? Shouldn’t they be capable of beating big teams?
Let’s not forget that they spent £150m. That’s a staggeringly huge amount of money.
And yet, if the papers are to be believed, The Red Devils are looking to spend big again during the January transfer window. Van Gaal and co. aren’t afraid to throw money at their problems are they?
Since the start of the season Manchester United have been linked with a move for Roma’s combative midfielder, Kevin Strootman. The 24-year-old has been labelled ‘The Dutch Roy Keane’, so it’s easy enough to see why the club would be interested. He’s a good fit for them and the Premier League in general.
He sits in front of the back four, mops up any ball that comes his way and quickly sparks attacks into life. Better still, he’s got bags of energy. Because he’s such an athletic presence, he’s more than capable of bursting up field and effecting play in the final third.
As it happens, it looks like he’d be up for a move to Old Trafford. According to The Express, Strootman is ‘keen’ to join The Red Devils. It’s suggested that a lack of game time in the Italian capital could be the driving force behind his decision.
Of course, there’s no real way to know whether these claims are true. For the club’s sake, however, I hope that they are. If Manchester United are to push on, they’ll need to add some more steel to their midfield. Let’s just hope that Kevin Strootman really does have his heart set on a move to the Premier League.
