For the last 12-18 months, Liverpool have been linked strongly to Barcelona’s flying winger, Cristian Tello.
Brendan Rodgers has a reputation for chasing and signing young players with pace, flair and attacking verve. Tello, the little Spanish ace, certainly ticks these boxes.
Last summer, Brendan was clearly after a player in this mould. That’s why he ended up loaning Victor Moses from Chelsea. The former Wigan man has had his moments, but he hasn’t exactly made a lasting impact at Anfield.
The fact that Brendan Rodgers spent a large chunk of the January transfer window chasing Ukranian winger, Yevhen Konoplyanka is telling. He still clearly feels that this is an area of his squad that he needs to improve on.
The Reds could well go on to win the Premier League this season, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t further work to be done improving the squad. Bringing in a player like Tello could be just the ticket.
As it happens The Mirror recently ran an article suggesting that Brendan Rodgers is ‘still hoping’ to sign the Barcelona winger when the summer transfer window re-opens. The same source also captions one of the images in the article with ‘Boom boom boom, lemme hear you say Tello!’, so maybe we should take their claims with a pinch of salt.
If there’s any truth to the story, it’d be very exciting news indeed. The Mirror suggest that he could be available for as little as £12m, which strikes me as something of a bargain for a player who has so much potential.
Unfortunately, the deal could hit a snag. Barcelona are facing a 14-month ban on making any fresh new signings. If the ban sticks, they certainly won’t want to lose any important squad players like Cristian Tello.
If Liverpool want this deal to go through, they may need to rely on Barcelona getting FIFA’s ban over-turned. Either way, it’ll be fascinating to watch this story play out. Fingers crossed that Brendan Rodgers is finally able to get his man.

I think tello is good but I would prefer callum mcmanaman. Why no big team has been linked with him is beyond me. He’s the most fearless dribbler Ive seen in a while. Also I would love for us to get ravel morrison. He’s got issues but he’s by far the most talented young English player out there… and yes more than sterling… both won’t cost that much either.
But is he really that good? If he isn’t good enough to get into the Barcelona team then why is he good enough for Liverpool??
Tello is simply good enough because Liverpool is the poor cousin of Barcelona.
