Whilst injury to Philippe Coutinho has rocked Liverpool, it’s fair to say that things have gone swimmingly for Brendan Rodgers and co. so far this season. They’re currently nestled at the top of the Premier League table and show no signs of slowing down.
Yes, the Reds weren’t fantastic against Swansea City (particularly in the second half), they’ve looked remarkably strong thus far.
What’s more, any lack of creativity that could arise from Coutinho’s absence will likely be erased by the return of Luis Suarez. The Uruguayan forward has been out for some time, following his mouth-based misdemeanour and will come back fighting fit. He was Liverpool’s best player by some way last and he’s sure to have a major impact this year.
In public, I’m sure Brendan Rodgers will tell all and sundry that Liverpool aren’t title contenders and that the club is merely aiming for a Champions League spot. In his private moments, however, I can’t help but wonder if he holds out some hope of the Reds surprising everybody this year.
And why not? Why not aim big? Liverpool have started strong and should they continue to provide the goods, they should be up there at the end of the season. All the club needs now is momentum.
As such, I’m sure the January transfer window will have a big role to play. Brendan Rodgers will likely be looking for an affordable, smart signing, who will carry the Reds through the rest of the season. That’s a big ask, but the former Swansea City boss does seem to know his way around the transfer market.
If I may, I’d like to position Lacina Traore as the perfect addition to this Liverpool squad. He’d provide that strength in depth that Rodger’s squad really needs.
Daniel Sturridge and Luis Suarez are the Reds’ first choice centre-forward pairing. But Liverpool could use another striker to increase competition and act as a fill-in when necessary.
Traore scored 12 goals in 24 games for Anzhi Makhachkala last season. He’s tall, powerful and can score some truly fantastic goals. He’s the kind of player who would provide Liverpool with an outlet in tough games and give the squad the extra dimension it needs.
The Star suggests that Liverpool could face competition from Galatasaray for Traore. With that in mind, maybe Brendan Rodgers should start the process now and snuff out the competition?
What’s your take? Should Liverpool move in for this Russian League giant?
