Liverpool are “hopeful” of tying up the signing of attacking midfielder Mohamed Salah at some point this week, according to the Telegraph.

The newspaper claim that the Merseysiders are closing in on the Roma wide man after stepping up negotiations in recent days.

The Telegraph report that Liverpool are “determined” to land the player and, in turn, Salah is keen to make a return to the Premier League despite struggling to make an impact at Chelsea.

It is said that Liverpool will at least equal the£35million club-record they shelled on Andy Carroll in 2011 and could even go beyond that figure to secure the signing of the Egyptian.

Liverpool have already had a £28million bid rejected for Salah by Roma but will continue to negotiate in order to reach an agreement, while the player is set to agree personal terms on a deal worth around £90,000-a-week.

Salah has been in prime form for Roma in the recently completed season, scoring 19 goals and supplying 15 assists in 41 matches in all competitions, with 15 of his 31 goals coming in league matches alone.

He signed for the Italian outfit permanently in the summer of 2016 from Chelsea after initially impressing on a season-long loan, and he has flourished in Rome.

Klopp is keen to strengthen a Liverpool attack that looked one-paced during the absences of Sadio Mane, who made a huge impact after joining from Southampton last summer.

Like Mane, Salah is predominantly a right-sided player and possesses the ability to penetrate defences with his speed and mobility as well as being a prolific goalscorer.

Salah will become the second recruit since the end of the season after Liverpool announced the imminent capture of youngster Dominic Solanke from Chelsea last week.

The Telegraph report that although Salah may join as a club record signing, that honour is highly unlikely to remain his for long.

Liverpool are also trying to sign Virgil van Dijk from Southampton and reports on Monday claimed the centre-back is keen to move to the Merseysiders ahead of his other suitors Chelsea and Manchester City.

It is expected that Liverpool will pay in excess of £50million to prise Van Dijk, 25, from St Mary’s Stadium.
