According to reports from the Liverpool Echo yesterday evening, scouts from Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United and Spurs ran the rule over William Carvalho during the U21 European Championship’s final on Tuesday.
Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal reportedly requested weekly reports on the Sporting Lisbon star earlier this season, whilst the Gunners are believed to have already tabled an offer that could be worth as much as £37million including add-ons.
But it appears Arsenal and Manchester United now face some competition in the race to sign the monolithic defensive midfielder, who measures in at 6 foot 2 and allegedly weighs in excess of 14 stone.
Along with rumoured interest from Monaco, the Liverpool Echo claim Liverpool and Spurs sent scouts to watch Carvalho in action as the Portugal U21s squared off against Sweden in Tuesday’s European Championship final.
A fully fledged senior international with 13 caps already, Carvalho excelled at the Euros and officially received the Player of the Tournament award yesterday afternoon.
He was, however, unfortunate enough to miss the deciding penalty in the final’s shoot-out, seeing Sweden claim the first international youth title in their history.
