Leeds United: Journalist now expects big transfer deal to go through

Leeds United are now expected to lose homegrown midfielder Kalvin Phillips this summer, with a deal potentially worth in the region of £45-50m. 

This is according to TalkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, who believes the Whites are getting a good deal with Manchester City believed to be his expected destination.

The Athletic has reported Pep Guardiola’s side are now expected to launch their move for the Leeds midfielder with a bid of up to £50m.

It does appear as if Jesse Marsch’s side are putting in plans for a possible Phillips departure this summer, with Marc Roca and Tyler Adams both linked with potential moves to Elland Road.

Although Phillips has played a huge role in Leeds’ recent success, Crook believes a deal worth in the region of £50m for his sale is about right for the 26-year-old.

He said: “I think it will happen.

“The fee is going to be £45m/£50m. I’m not sure Kalvin Phillips is a Manchester City player.

“I think part of the attraction is that he’s English and there’s a certain homegrown quota that Manchester City want to hit, but I think it’s a big step up for Kalvin Phillips. I think it’s a good deal for Leeds, to be honest with you – if they get £50m, I think that’s good money.”

TIF Thoughts on Crook’s comments…

Phillips did struggle last season and injury certainly played a big role in those struggles, with just 20 Premier League appearances to his name across the campaign.

So in that sense, we do have to agree with Crook in thinking £50m would probably be a good deal for Leeds and they should not feel short-changed by that.

Obviously, some fans will compare this proposed fee to what other players are being touted. However, when you compare it to Yves Bissouma’s potential £25m move to Tottenham Hotspur – albeit with one year left on his contract – it does feel like a fair valuation.
