Despite spending a whopping £211million since becoming Liverpool boss in summer 2012, there’s one area of the transfer market Brendan Rodgers has indisputably failed in – attracting a marquee signing to Anfield.

Plenty have crossed his transfer crosshairs during that time period; the Reds were targeting Henrikh Mkhytarian before his move to Borussia Dortmund, Diego Costa a year before he went to Chelsea, Willian, who also ended up at Stamford Bridge, and most recently Alexis Sanchez, who rejected Merseyside for north London.

Having received a 4-1 thumping from the Gunners on Saturday, effectively ending Liverpool’s hopes of attaining Champions League status for a second consecutive season, Rodgers has now admitted that the Reds will struggle to make top level signings of that calibre in the coming transfer window – as reported by talkSPORT.

“Liverpool is a phenomenal club that players want to play for, but, of course, players want to play at the top level of the game and if you are not in the Champions League it makes it difficult for you,” he said.

“We know that, but we just have to continue to fight in order to be a stable club in there – and we will continue to do that,” he added.

It will be disappointing news for Liverpool fans amid news that contract rebels Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling have been linked with moves to Chelsea, amongst other Premier League clubs, as This Is Futbol informed you earlier today.
