At thirty-one Steven Gerrard’s career is heading towards its death as a Liverpool player. Although his influence is yet to wane as he is still able to change matches for Liverpool in the blink of an eye, it appears that a constant barrage of niggling injuries may well prove to force premature retirement plans. It will be a shame to see one of England’s most influential players succumb to injury but it appears that the inevitable isn’t that long away; so who can Liverpool look to next?
They could look close to home with the likes of Jay Spearing, Jonjo Shelvey and Jordan Henderson all hoping to step up to the plate. Spearing for one continues to split opinion, some believe that the Liverpool born player is the type of combative and feisty player Liverpool lack but others think the youngster is purely not good enough for a side challenging for Champion’s League qualification. Henderson is another man to split the opinions of pundits and fans alike as he has been much criticised this season perhaps unfairly. He seems to possess intelligence but perhaps lacks the ambition and drive of Gerrard. Finally you have Shelvey, signed from Charlton to be the long term replacement for Gerrard. However the youngster hasn’t quite impressed as much as he should have during the limited amount of game time he has received. It’s too early to tell as far as these three are concerned as only time will tell whether they deserve the chance to replace Gerrard.
So maybe Liverpool’s best option is to look abroad for a replacement and one man being heavily linked with Anfield is Bologna’s Gaston Ramirez. The attacking midfielder is just 21 and has been compared to the great Kaka in his brief career. The Uruguayan has had his intelligence, seemingly effortless ability find space and secure a defence threading final ball marvelled at. At 6ft he is a physical presence to match Gerrard and is arguably a more skill-full proposition than his potential predecessor. The midfielder also has a goal scoring dimension to his game notching up 6 goals in his 30 Serie A appearances this season.
It’s likely that Liverpool will be splashing the cash this summer as they look to right the wrongs of this campaign and amend the likely 8th position they seem to be set to achieve this year. Perhaps this man should be their top target as they look to the future, the future unfortunately without Steven Gerrard.

Kenny buying players is a scary prospect, this is a man who chose Adam over Meireles, Downing over Mata and continues to pick Henderson ahead of better and more determined players like Maxi, Shelvey and to an extent Kuuyt.
Many will argue its because he was looking locally but need I remind you he also bought Nicos Dabizaz and Stefan Guivarch for top dollar while at Newcastle.
