Whilst we’re all keen for Liverpool to prove their ambitions by making their presence felt in the transfer market, what fans won’t want to see is their club dive in and make signings that fail to improve the team. We all saw the areas of weakness throughout the club last season and it’s those areas that Brendan Rodgers and FSG should be looking to cover by getting rid of those who haven’t made the grade and bringing in those who can make a real difference.
Which brings me to The Sun’s claims that Liverpool are lining up a move for Montpellier full-back Henri Bedimo. The 27-year-old joined Montpellier last season and was an integral part of the Ligue 1 side’s successful title charge. He clearly impressed enough to attract foreign suitors. He recently told The Sun: “I’m going to play in England next season. I’ll announce where next week”.
What a tease! It’s claimed that both Liverpool and Newcastle are after the Cameroonian International. But would he be a good addition for the Reds?
This strikes me as a strange one. The full-back position is not one where Liverpool are particularly weak. Both Glen Johnson and Jose Enrique are extremely capable, experienced defenders who can provide something going forward. This doesn’t strike me as a position that really needs dealing with.
I could understand if Liverpool were looking at centre-backs. Jamie Carragher’s getting on in years and Daniel Agger is a constant injury risk. The midfield could probably use some work too, as the likes of Charlie Adam, Jordan Henderson and Stewart Downing simply don’t appear to be coming up with the goods. That’s why Liverpool’s links to Hoffenheim’s Gylfi Sigurdsson make a lot of sense.
The main area of concern, however, surely has to be the striker position. Whilst Luis Suarez cuts a rather impressive figure and is a real handful for Premier League defenders, he’s not a natural goal-scorer. Neither, it seems, is Andy Carroll who has failed to make the step up at Liverpool. Despite his Euro 2012 goal fans will surely want further additions to be made up front.
So why would the club look at the full-back positions. Either there’s something strange at work, or The Sun are spreading nonsense.
Whatever the case may be, I hope this is one player that Liverpool steer clear of. There are clearly more pressing priorities to deal with.
