Are Chelsea about to unleash the second Russian revolution?

|

The second ‘Russian Revolution’ looks to have already started, with Eden Hazard, the Belgian playmaker confirming on his twitter account that he would be joining the European champions, significantly picking them over the Manchester based clubs, who had finished first and second in the Premier League. Chelsea have moved quickly to add the list of their summer signings, seeking to snap up FC Porto forward Hulk who has admitted that he’d ‘be happy‘ if the transfer went through. The ballmark figure is speculated to be between £35-43 million (Source: The Daily Mail). If the deal does go through, Chelsea’s summer spending will move up to around £70 million, and the spending does not look like stopping anytime soon.

With the Russian owner now having won the Champions League, he is looking to bring attractive football to Stamford Bridge, by creating a team that will bring out the best in £50 million hitman Fernando Torres. Should Chelsea sign Hulk, Chelsea could line up with an attacking four next season, with the interchangeable Hulk, Mata and Hazard supporting Torres who will look to be the vocal point of the Chelsea team with Drogba confirming he will not stay on at the club. With Chelsea looking to bring an anchor man into their midfield, with the possibility of a creative midfielder being brought into the club, Everton’s Fellaini and Croatian playmaker Luka Modric (who The Telegraph claims Chelsea are still chasing), also linked with Manchester United, will cost Chelsea in excess of £20 million for either of the players.

The club may also dip into the market to look for a first or second choice right back, with the release of Jose Bosingwa meaning that Ivanovic has made the right back position at Chelsea permanent, with a new right back signing looking to be second choice, providing a more attacking option when Chelsea are in need of a goal, in comparison to the steel and consistency Ivanovic will provide to the position. Ajax right back Van Der Wiel has recently confessed that he would be interested in joining the club, but no concrete offer has been made, so this signing could be one to monitor over the summer.

The transfer of Luka Modric looks increasingly likely with Chelsea being long term admirers of the Croatian, and now being able to offer Champions League football after the clubs heroics in Munich. The transfer is going to cost the club close to £30 million, which will bring the clubs spending in excess of £100 million if the value of Hazard and the potential signing of Hulk are considered, with over a month to go in the summer transfer market. With no end in sight of when Abramovich’s spending spree will end, who is to say that the ‘Russian Revolution’ isn’t bringing success to the club, with the first leading to consecutive Premier League titles.
