That supposedly bearded man, ‘God’, appears in these ones too, but if some players are atheists then they could simply change that word to something that they consider to be their ‘God’. The lyric in ‘Land of Hope and Glory’, God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet could instead be Agent, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet. Brilliant idea, eh? ‘God Save the Queen’ is about one hereditary lucky person or family depending on how you look at it whereas the aforementioned compositions are about the country itself.
Would we rather be known as a ‘land of hope and glory’ or a land where there is not a great amount of hope if one happens to be born into a family that cannot inherit unlimited power and resources like members of the Royal Family do. For those who decry pathetic cries of ‘traitor to England’ whenever something to do with the Monarchy is questioned, ‘God Save the Queen’ is actually a British anthem, not an English one hence why you would have been hard-pushed to spot a St. George’s flag during the Jubilee frenzy a few weeks ago. Scotland and Wales have their own songs that are compatible with them as a nation so why can’t we? If the words of ‘Land of Hope and Glory’ and ‘Jerusalem’ are somewhat outdated then I personally think that the ones of ‘God Save the Queen’ are a perfect encapsulation of England’s current state.

It’s certainly made ‘morons’ of those who said that our qualification and team spirit were due to players singing the National Anthem in unison. Didn’t help them against Italy did it?
