David Moyes: The Man Who May Need To Move On:

|

Many believe, in some cases reluctantly, that the Everton manager is simply biding his time, patiently waiting for Ferguson to call it a day at Old Trafford. Moyes’ style of play can be somewhat criticised, especially when facing stronger, overwhelming clubs, as it leads to negativity and ‘parking the bus’, occasionally stealing those invaluable three points with a solitary goal. However, as we often see at the climax of a season, the football is flowing, attractive, creative.

The style is not unlike that of United’s own, and is possibly why Ferguson, upon retiring, may wish for his fellow Glaswegian to become his successor. With the money Moyes would have at his disposal compared to his budget at Everton, along with his tactical knowledge and understanding, he would surely be consistently challenging for silverware.

There are, and always will be, on the other hand, further options available to a manager who holds many qualities to his name; these traits play a major role in him being linked to numerous clubs. When Andre Villas-Boas parted company with Chelsea in June, Moyes’ name was  alongside the select few who were rumoured to be in contention for the job, whatever the odds. He would, like at Manchester United, most likely excel there; nevertheless, one slip in form, with Abramovich looming over any Chelsea manager’s shoulder, could be disastrous in terms of reputation, and Moyes undoubtedly knows this.

Even Spain’s Athletico Madrid were linked to Moyes, a move that, should a similar one ever pay off, would certainly be interesting. Despite the ‘long ball’ now and again, any experienced manager should adapt to a new culture and Everton’s football in the latter half of most seasons would be warmly welcomed in various areas of Europe. Talk of the Scot returning to Celtic is far from unrealistic, as is an international job. Wherever Moyes’ future lies (possibly at a wealthier Everton?) needs to be at the highest level with suitable funds to prove his own ability. 10 years ago, the Glaswegian made an admirable step-up; who says he can’t do it again?
