The Premier League Thanks You, Swansea City

|

Regrettably, there is one standout concern: do Swansea have a plan B? If Rodgers knows anything about his adopted fashion, it is that backup is vital. After all, Barcelona overplayed the ball against Chelsea and suffered the consequences of their inflexibility to adapt to the situation. However, with a midfield to boast that acted as the integral piece in the jigsaw, a fluid 4-3-3 became the law for 95% of Swansea’s season. Therefore, it was pleasantly surprising when, against a relegated Wolves side, Rodgers switched his team to 3-4-3.

Egotistic? No. Experimental? Yes.

Given the 4-4 score line, looking back on those 90 minutes suggests two clear learning curves and areas to analyse if Rodgers is to utilise that formation again. It clearly works going forward, as they scored 4 goals. However, their usually reliable defence (which has kept numerous clean sheets during the season) was clearly stretched, conceding the same amount in the process. Loanee Gylfi Sigurdsson (after arriving in January) added his own talents to the squad, giving them a consistent striker who played a prolific central role, scoring valuable goals for the club.

If Swansea bend their own rules whilst keeping faith in their deeply instilled morals, they can only move up the Premier League as long as they strengthen in areas they feel necessary. Naturally, Brendan Rodgers owns the role of the protagonist here; he faces tough competition to improve upon the outstanding debut season he crafted, as the top flight continues to become a tighter, more excitedly contested struggle for all teams involved. Therefore, it is moderately pleasing to see Rodgers’ commitment to the club, after he turned down Liverpool’s offer of an interview to replace the recently sacked Dalglish. Bizarrely yet pleasingly, it seems that the Spanish team from Wales will be continuing to teach the majority of England a valuable lesson for a considerable time to come, something which I, for one, will be welcoming with open arms.
