Is a cup double enough for Liverpool fans?

|

Often they can be used as a springboard for greater success such as the time United won the Carling Cup in 2006 at the height of Jose Mouriniho`s reign at Chelsea. Similarly last year Madrid triumphing in the Copa Del Rey added some gloss to a season spent in Barcelona’s shadow and convinced fans the next season would bring greater success. Liverpool’s cup runs should convince the critics they are a far better team than then their league position suggests, particularly when you consider the teams they have beaten on the way.

A bit more quality and consistency should enable Liverpool to compete again next season, the value of a world class striker has been proved comprehensively by Van Persie, Liverpool can look at Arsenal and confidently say they have a squad that is as least as good as the Londoners. Liverpool fans should accept another year without the C.L if this year brings two trophies, after all LFC has always existed to win silverware.

Of course that is assuming Liverpool do finish in the top four next year a task that is getting more and more difficult with the increasing dilution of quality in the league. This space predicted Liverpool would finish in the top four and end their trophy drought, with only one prophecy set to be fulfilled. Dalglish knows the pressure will be intense come next September. A trophy (or maybe two) will placate the faithful but they will grow increasingly restless if the club finds itself in the same position next March. Dalglish is far from being guaranteed security of tenure and he knows better than anyone that the weight of expectation on Merseyside obliges him to deliver.

So should Liverpool be satisfied with this season? Well failure to win the F.A cup will make a lowly league position a bitter pill to swallow but all is not lost. Dalglish has had an instant impact and though his transfer dealings have been questionable, his Cup runs entitle him to at least another season. Those who accuse him of being unable to grasp the nuances of modern football after his self-imposed exile will do well to remember that. Liverpool have missed an opportunity this season but they have a chance to rectify the situation and what better way to soothe the ails with a trophy or two? After all look where they were fifteen months ago.
