What happened to this great team? The 30th anniversary of Leicester City’s greatest match:

|

When my name came out first and meant that i would have the 5th and Semi final trips I was as you can imagine ‘over the moon Harry’. So I got to see the 2-0 home win over Watford whilst my colleague would get to see whoever we got in the quarters.

Now life’s a bitch and yes I know I got to see Leicester City in a semi final of The FA Cup, a game remembered more for Ossie the Argentinian, on the day The Sun‘s headline blasted out ‘Its War’ in reference to The Falklands. But when I left work that Saturday night I must admit my thoughts were: how can we follow that?

A steady flow of customers had kept us updated in what turned out to be a quiet trading day, and I still say to this day that as I left work I heard the cheer as City’s 5th goal went in but I will admit that maybe time has helped build up this fact in my own mind. The details of the match itself has been well documented elsewhere on this site and others, but it created heroes of those who wore the blue that day and is still the source of many a furrowed brow at pub quizzes when people really  can’t believe one team used 3 keepers and all this in the days of 1 substitute.

Now we all know what happened to two of the team. One went onto a successful career at National & International level becoming a media darling and one was Alan Young (sorry Alan). Knowing Alan as I personally do now, and it is an honour Sir, I know he will take that in the manner in which it is intended. Two of the people involved are no longer with us so RIP Bobby Smith & Jock Wallace, but what of the rest?

Well, I am looking forward to finding out. It is the 30th Anniversary of this great match this year and as you will see from the picture at the top of this blog a Anniversary dinner is being held at the Walkers Stadium on the 15th of March and quite a few of the team from that day will be there. At time of writing this Mark Wallington, who it has to be said is to blame for all this, will be in attendance. After all if he hadn’t attacked Chic Bate’s foot with his leg and had stayed on the pitch who knows, it might have ended in a boring 1-0. The 3rd man, to use spy talk, Steve Lynex will be there and Alan Young will of course be making up the trio of ‘keepers. Also attending are Williams, May, Peake, Friar, Wilson,  Byrne and O’Neill. Bobby Smith will be represented by his family and Jock Wallace’s widow is coming over from Spain.

I am sure they will all have their own versions & stories of what happened that day, and as I too will be there I look forward to hearing what they are.

So there you have it. I can’t say to my assorted offspring I was THERE, but 30 years on,  I can say I WASN’T THERE but will be at THE REUNION.

Tickets are still available at £55 a head and details of how to order are on the picture above, as well as on the competition & home pages on the website www.leicestertillidie.com  but one lucky Leicester City fan can win a FREE ticket courtesy of Leicester till I Die and Event Elephant the evening organisers.

There are two ways to enter, visit the Leicester till I Die main facebook page, like the page then find the competition thread and simply share the picture, or via the website mentioned go to the competition page and answer the question, the answer to which is in this blog. Good luck and who knows I may well see you there – oh and if you’re going remember to come up and say ‘Hi’.
