Is Promotion a realistic goal for the Saints?

|

With an array of strikers all of different qualities and consistencies, it seems that a prolific partner for Rickie Lambert was needed, taking the pressure of the ex-Bristol Rovers striker, as well as the likes of Guly and Lallana for goals. Sharp, alongside Tadanari Lee, could prove the real difference in the second half of the season, giving plenty of options for the Southampton boss to ponder.

Sharp in particular has proven quality, particularly in this league, and with an already existing relationship with Nigel Adkins, he could fit straight in to the Southampton set up, leaving the attacking prowess a real force to be reckoned with.

Unfortunately, the competition is tough. West Ham, in my eyes, are too good for the Championship, with Kevin Nolan and Carlton Cole showing upmost class week in week out to embarrass opposing teams (The 5-1 schooling presented to them by an out of form Ipswich side a notable exception). The challengers are mounting up behind Southampton as well, with any team down to about 12th still in with a shot of automatic promotion.

Reading have been on a good run of form, Cardiff are always there or there about come the end of the season and Chris Houghton’s Europa League veteran’s Birmingham look unbeatable at present. This leaves the pressure well and truly on Southampton to continue extending the gap between them and the murky waters of the play off zone, as should the Saints settle for 3rd or 4th, anything could happen come May.

However with the financial backing to support their plight for both promotion and maintenance in the Premier League, as well as the strength in depth within the squad to keep results ticking over when needed, it appears that Southampton have the resources to support continued success in the Championship.

With the fans hopeful yet not expectant of instant promotion, Southampton F.C. could swap with the likes of Wigan, Wolves or Blackburn, and be the next team to fight for their safety in the Premier League when the start of the 2012/13 season is upon us. The run of fixtures in February and March leaves Southampton playing teams in and around them. However should they come out unscathed against teams including the likes of Burnley and West Ham, the automatic promotion spot is well and truly theirs to lose.
