Seeing as this is likely to be a rare involvement in the Europa League in the coming years they may as well go for it. The name of their supposed next opponents in the competition, European giants Ajax, is sure to whet the appetite of many United fans, players and coaching staff alike; with pride being an issue in not wanting to be outwitted by the Dutch side who have won the European Cup on no less than four occasions.
I get the feeling that if Ferguson and co were drawn against a far lesser side then they would take it less seriously than they may do now (feel free to tell me that I’m talking rubbish, but that’s my instinct) as Manchester United are a proud club who want to stand alongside the most successful in the world and would not want to fall further behind on the honours list to one who are very much ahead of them in that category.

Ajax have won all that there is to win at home and abroad whereas United have not, so if the latter were not to put every effort into winning it, I get the sense that they would feel that Ajax were getting further ahead of them in terms of honours won. They’re already ahead in that sense along with numerous other sides across Europe. Take clubs such as Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich for example: not only have they all won the European Cup/Champions League more times than United, but they have also triumphed in all the other European competitions, Cup Winners’ and UEFA Cup.
That is why Manchester United should grab this opportunity with both hands because otherwise they will be on the outskirts of the tightly knit group that consists of the main powerhouses of the continent. They will be the lonely man in the cold peering into the windows of a warm and cosy house viewing a family tucking into a nice hot dinner. They’ll be close to them, but not enough for comfort.
