Will this be the man to keep Modric at White Hart Lane?

|

The Croatian’s celebration of that goal did not resemble that of a man who had appeared so unsettled just weeks earlier. On the contrary, he appeared genuinely overjoyed and celebrated it like he meant it in front of the Tottenham fans.

With Parker now in the fold, I believe that Tottenham have one of the strongest starting eleven’s in the country. In a rare moment of wisdom, Match of the Day’s footballer-turned-pundit Mark Lawrenson claimed that Spurs have the best midfield in the Premier League with Bale, Parker, Modric and Lennon.

For once, I’d be inclined to agree with him. When those four are at their best, they are virtually unplayable. Add in one of the most reliable goalkeepers around, a formidable back four (provided they can keep Ledley King fit and healthy) and Van der Vaart and Adebayor as constant goal threats and Tottenham have quite a special team at their disposal.

As such, you have to question whether the previously unsettled Modric would actually want to leave White Hart Lane anymore. The primary team who were courting the Croatian was Chelsea who, besides having filled the creative midfielder position with the sublime Juan Mata, do not look anywhere near as confident or dangerous as Tottenham do right now.

Of course, Manchester United are still severely lacking in that creative midfield position, as was perfectly illustrated in their devastating 6-1 loss to Man City. Although Wesley Sneijder and Jack Rodwell are more obviously on United’s radar, it would not be surprising if Sir Alex Ferguson made a move for Modric in January. Plus, Modric has already noted that he may not stay at Tottenham if Harry Redknapp does indeed leave the club at the end of the season to become the new England manager, as is the persistent rumour.

Although it would be understandable if Modric chose to move to the North-West to join the 19 time Premier League champions, it would be a real shame when he has formed such a formidable partnership with Scott Parker at Spurs. I hope he considers how great he has been playing since Parker came into the fold and recognises the quality of the team around him if Man Utd do come knocking in January. After all, if he stays, Tottenham have a real chance to not only finish in the top four this season, but to do it regularly for many seasons to come.
