Is It Right To Vilify This Former Sunderland Striker?

|

The suggestion is that he has quadrupled his wage to £100,000 a week, meaning that by Premier League standards he was not being paid a vast amount of money on Wearside (although compared to ‘the man in the street’ it was still a disgustingly huge amount of money, but lets not get into player salaries here!), and so therefore this chance to earn such a huge pay rise will clearly have been an attractive proposition, and maybe he has a point, maybe this is the best thing for his family, should he be lambasted for setting his children up with the best possible future?

I suppose the counter argument to that would be that he was earning enough money already to mean that his children could have the best education and whatever they wanted, so the extra £75,000 is just greed, but in the real world, how many of you would change jobs for such a huge pay rise, I know that I would.

The other argument is on professional grounds, why would he want to play in such a poorer quality league?  Well in this day and age you find more and more players claiming football to them is a job, not a passion.  Look at Tottenham defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto, he was lauded by some sections of the press for being honest and open and saying that football to him was just a way to earn a good living, and if it wasn’t for the money he probably wouldn’t play.  If we accept that argument can we really vilify Gyan?

The striker has not ruled out a move back to Sunderland, his deal with Al Ain is only a loan after all, he has described Steve Bruce as a father figure and stated what a huge debt he owes the Mackem boss. Maybe we could see him playing in the Premier League again, but what if it is time to accept his decision and remember that to many players football is just a job and they like us would change companies jobs, whatever if it meant a huge pay rise.

I am a huge Manchester City fan, but also a fan of football as a game. I like to watch games at all levels, from Blue Square Premier, right up to the Premier League where I have a season ticket at City. I really enjoy writing for This Is Futbol because it allows me to give my thoughts on the very latest pieces of football news. I also run thoughtsfromtheinvisibleman.blogspot.com for all things Manchester City.

Sure, who can blame him for wanting to do the best for his family.
But for those of us who have (and continue)to pay money as supporters of a club …. forget it.
Continuing our decades of loyalty is now a waste of time and money, we are the mugs who pay for his idiosyncrasies.
To Joe T, you appear to be the epitome of the armchair supporter, the fodder of Sky tv.

The reason why Sunderland fans are so annoyed with Gyan is that he said himself he was going nowhere, he shook hands with Steve Bruce and assured him he was staying. Steve Bruce passed those sentiments to the Press.
Then what? 24 hours later Gyan up and leaves, leaving Steve Bruce who is made to look foolish and Gyan is shown to be a liar.
Gyan is man with no back bone and has left in such a way he thinks he can never ever return. I hope Sunderland do bring him back after the loan is up he for 1 home game just to let him see what the fans exactly think of him!
