I’ve often found myself wondering whether the criticism I’m handing out to these overpaid ‘stars’ is justified owing to the fact I’m spending my hard earned cash to watch them perform. Repugnant players like Owen who display careless levels of greed or Carlos Tevez who disrespected Roberto Mancini, Manchester City along with every single heart and mind connected with football by refusing to remove his overpaid behind from the bench and play when his team needed his talent. It’s despicable acts like these that enrage fans and cause them to use their pricey season ticket as an excuse to vilify.
However I always try to look at this issue from a rational perspective and whilst it’s easy to use the inflated ticket fees as an excuse to constantly persecute footballers for earning what they do. Whilst critiquing performance is acceptable taking insults to a personal level is uncalled for and unjustifiable.
Lets not forget that no matter how detached from reality modern day players have become they are still human beings with families and are simply trying to earn a good living to make sure they have an good life. It’s easy to forget that a football career only lasts around 15 years or so and the objective is to obtain the best wage that they can in that time.
Whilst the money driven nature and unsustainable demands of players is slowly but surely killing football it still doesn’t give fans the right to shower them with a deluge of abuse. I accept that ticket prices are scandalous it doesn’t give any fan the entitlement to call a player every name under the sun. I have no doubt in my mind that if they were given the same opportunity to earn they’d accept without thinking and never look back.
