The pressure that attaches itself to such a role should force anyone into a rethink about what kind of message they are giving out about themselves. Rooney definitely has a wild side but I could see the captaincy quelling the inner child that exists within him. In my opinion his actions still scream of immaturity but there is a thought that the armband could force him to mature, change his attitude and become that glowing beacon for English football. With the ball at his feet he is a genius, a mastermind, but off it his decision-making leaves much to be desired.
But could that armband cause Rooney to re-think his choices off the field and consider making decisions based on logic rather than impulse? I’m sure he would take immense pride in being handed the captaincy and admittedly it could turn out to be a turning point not only in his career but his life. He already has the attitude on the football field and I think the armband could possible force him to adopt that same approach off it.
Unfortunately I think he’ll be deemed too much of a risk by the FA to ever be England captain. It’s a crying shame because he is a fantastic footballer and on the pitch I have a lot of admiration for him. His willingness to run himself into the ground for his side, his tenacity and natural ability to produce something truly astounding should merit the England captaincy alone. But the truth is that being a fantastic footballer is only half the job when it comes to standing a top the pinnacle of English football. You have to have that wholesome image to wear the sacred armband.
Maybe it’s time to lose that stigma and let Rooney blend the rough with the smooth. England could do with 11 Wayne Rooney’s on the field. Whether the armband would force him into changing his ways and becoming the mature, sensible person that is required of a nature is unknown. The only way to find out is to actually give him a chance and see what happens.
