Michael Woods

What happened?

Chelsea risked a tapping-up scandal when prizing Michael Woods alongside team-mate Tom Taiwo (more on him later) from the Leeds academy in 2006, eventually resulting in a £5million out-of-court settlement for the once prodigious duo.

He was billed as an eventual successor to Frank Lampard, blessed with similar box-to-box goalscoring prowess, a comparison confirmed when Woods came on for the Blues icon during an FA Cup match in January 2007 to become the fourth-youngest debutant in Chelsea history.

That was one of a rare few senior outings for the midfielder, however, who eventually left the Blues in 2011 on a free transfer without a single Premier League appearance to his name.

Where is he now?

After leaving Chelsea, Woods joined Yeovil and Doncaster in League One, making just five appearances for the former and only one for the latter, before a nine-goal-35-game spell with sixth-tier outfit Harrogate.

Now 25 years of age, Woods represents Hartlepool United of Jeff Stelling fame, who are currently just one point above the relegation zone in League Two.
