Everyone in the wider world of football always knew that this summer was going to be a huge one for Liverpool as they made the transition from Jurgen Klopp to new gaffer Arne Slot.
The obvious concern for Anfield fans was not just the dug out change, key players were soon to be out of contract and the main three of note were Virgil van Dijk, Trent Alexander-Arnold and their absolutely key Egyptian wizard Mohamed Salah, and naturally losing any of them would have ramifications when it came to their more consistent battles for the top of the table again.
Van Dijk is reportedly close to a new contract now, Alexander-Arnold seems set on a move away from the club with Real Madrid heavily linked and the players’ own comments suggest he believes his future success is not in England, or with England, but lies with the Ballon d’Or.
But Salah has now gone public and expressed his ‘disappointment’ that the club have not even yet formally tabled a new offer.
It had long been believed that talks had been ongoing between the two parties but the hold up was purely a financial issue, and Salah’s importance over the years to the club cannot in anyway be understated following his impact on his 2017 move from Italian Serie A side Roma, so many fans believed it was a case of ‘pay what is needed’.
But with the 32 year old, with 12 goals to his name already during the 2024/25 campaign (across all competitions) now claiming that he has not been offered a firm deal, and that there is nothing on the table, despite him being out of contract in the summer and free to talk to clubs abroad in the New Year, this is unlikely to sit well with fans who are already concerned that a new deal has not been agreed.
Saying that he is now ‘probably more out than in’ will absolutely infuriate fans, but it will also completely confuse fans of rival clubs who would happily see their side pay whatever is needed for a proven goalscorer of his calibre.
A Liverpool source claims that talks are positive and are ongoing with his agent, and they will not publicly comment on his actual comments, but as we very quickly tick into the month of December, how is there not a baseline contract on the table even if further negotiation is expected.
Salah rarely speaks to reporters after a game, the fact he chose to for these comments – you can draw your own conclusions.
